I recently purchased a new DVD player that supports MPEG-4 so I burned a backup of one of my movies (Nero Digital MPEG-4 - Movie.mp4) to a CD and the player can not read it? Called tech support and they said just change the name to movie.AVI - still did not work. How do I get the stand alone DVD player to actually play an MP4 file created by Nero?

Welcome to the Forum:
Can your newly created *movie.avi* disc be read by your computer's software player? If your pc can read the renamed file, but your standalone can't, it could be a media incompatibility issue, which is fairly common. Before you chase down any other aspects of this problem, it could save you a lot of grief if you first make sure that the media you're using is compatible with your both your burner, and your standalone.
Check your player against this database:

Yes, the media works fine with VCD and SVCD. It just bothers me that Nero can create a "Backup" file in MPEG-4 format but you can't burn it back to CD or DVD and have the stand alone player actually read it - only PC's. I've contacted Nero they are silent now for over a week - no one will reply.

When you rename your Nero Digital file to *mymovie.avi*, can you play it in your pc's software player? You say that your pc can read back the file, but I'm not clear on whether it's before, or after the renaming step.

Yes - the PC can read the file (Nero Showtime) before (mp4) and after as and AVI.

OK, it seems as if Nero's codec can't be recognized by your standalone. On their site, they have a list of players that support the files produced by Nero Digital, so you might look into that. I just spent half an hour going through Nero's site looking for a tutorial or help on your topic and was mainly frustrated; all the "FAQ" and "Tutorial" links deadend back to the Nero Digital homepage.
If you can't get further support from Nero, and don't feel like spending the money to buy a new player, take a look at Auto Gordian Knot (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=92089). Manono's guide is easy to follow and the software is pretty slick to do the initial setup. You'll end up with an AVI file that your new player will support if it's MPEG-4 capable.
Maybe someone else will ring in with info specific to Nero Digital, but that's about all I've got for you.....I don't use the app and have no hands-on with it.

Thanks for the help. The player is supported Philips 642.

Currently there are very few stand-players that support playback of MPEG-4 video muxed into the .MP4 container. All current stand-players do however support MPEG-4 video when muxed into the .AVI container!
We have a list on the forum which contains most of the NeroDigital certified/supported players, which can be found here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=94538).
That said, I guess it might be time to create a list of players that support MPEG-4 in .MP4 too!
And don't panic if your player does not support MPEG-4 in MP4 because there are tools which will allow you to de-mux the MPEG-4 stream out of the MP4 container and into the AVI container.... Although you will have to re-encode the AAC audio stream to MP3, in order to maintain "AVI player" compliance!
EDIT: I see your player is a Philips DVP642. Although this player supports MPEG-4 in MP4, it does not support AAC audio.... So unfortunately you will have to re-encode the AAC audio stream to MP3
Sadly Philips have not been very pro-active at supporting AAC audio across the DVP64x range.... even though the players chip-set supports it

Good catch, SeeMore.
agiacoio-There are several ways in which to re-encode your Nero Digital audio files then mux them back into the .AVI container with your videostream, but this is a longer process than it has to be. I own a Philips DVP642 and have experienced excellent results by converting backups with AGK (link above) to XviD, using either the default AC3 audio, or MP3 at 128kbps. You can still get some of your money's worth back from Nero by sending the file to the burner with Nero Burning ROM. :)
There are other options open to you, all I can say is that this one has been working fine, for me.
Whatever you end up doing, drop back in and let us know how it works out for you.

When I last checked, the Philips DVP64x range of players supports the following: -
MPEG-4/ASP with MP3 audio in MP4
MPEG-4/ASP with MP3 audio in AVI
MPEG-4/ASP with AC3 audio in AVI
The player does not support MPEG-4 encodes with Qpel and/or 3-warp-point GMC... It also does not like MPEG-4 streams that include DAR signalling :(
There are MP4 muxing and de-muxing tools such as YAMB (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=93927), that will allow you to say, de-mux the MPEG-4 video stream and AAC audio stream out of the MP4 container. You could then re-encode the AAC stream to MP3... And mux both the MPEG-4 video stream and the MP3 audio stream into the MP4 container again.....
So the only stream you are re-encoding is the audio stream.... The video stream remains unchanged ;)

Agiacoio, you didn't think it helpful to tell us which DVD player you own and what Nero settings you used to make that movie? The replies you received are more than you deserved.
Nero uses AAC audio which the Philips 642 doesn't support. That is just one of a number of reasons for your problem. Download the Divx Create Bundle from Divx.com. Their MPEG4 encoder is easy enough for you to use and it will create good quality movies that will work on your DVD player.

renaming a .mp4 files to .avi is total nonsense!!!
nerodigital only creates .mp4 files, never .avi files. you cant create an .avi file by changing the extension
as smd already wrote the philips player was one of the first to support .mp4 (with mp3 audio, not aac audio as used by nerodigital)
it definitely doesnt support avc, so make sure that you dont encode with avc in nerodigital

Doobie,
Sorry for wasting your time - however, this was posted on the "NEWBIES" section and I don't know what I don't know regarding backup information. As far as the Divx bundle, already been there and it does not recognize the Nero mp4 file so it is unable to convert it - surprised you did not know that?

But like I said, you probably won't need to re-encode the video stream at all.... just the audio stream!
Here's an example MPEG-4 video with MP3 audio in MP4 (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/seemoredigital/MPEG-4_Player_Test_Files/MPEG-4_video_with_MP3_audio_in_MP4.7z) sample for you to try with your Philips player

Nothing wrong with being a newbie for a few days. But, much wrong with poor communications skills. Maybe I live in glass house here, but when you say something doesn't work with something, you ought to expect that someone helping you might need to know what those somethings are. I'll give you credit for not telling us what day you tried this on, and other irrelevant details. "Last Tuesday I tried to put in a disk in my black DVD player..." This is just some friendly advice for the future.
I didn't say that the Divx encoder would fix your MP4s. I was suggesting you use the Divx encoder instead of Nero.

I must admit every now and again I come across questions posted by newbies that really annoy me. Questions that could quite easily have been answered by conducting a few searches!
That said, I do feel the questions about what type of files can and cannot be played in hardware do often warrant some dispensation. As sadly the hardware market is still very confused.
Indeed.... it seems some questions can never be answered enough times ;)
