CPU Optimizations xvid 1.1 CVS Head 10-18-05

I got curious as to why my encoding wasn't going as fast as some others using the vfw so I decided to set the CPU optimiztions manually rather than using the autodetect I used "force optimizations" and checked all the buttons. it trippled xvids encoding speed. I couldn't believe it. Is there something broken in the autodetect feature of cpu optimizations? Thanks.

I hate to say it, but that is the absolute fastest processor I've ever known someone to have... Are you using VirtualDub-64bit? ...now, when you say triple the speed, what exactly is your framerate for the average DVD...? Just curious...

I usually use FILM framerate. but sometimes I get bored and leave it at VIDEO. With an vs that looks like this

It goes at 80fps without xvid on a single thread. with some of my standard filtering it gets about 35-38 without xvid.

Adding xvid and manually setting the optimizations I get 25fps with full filtering. about 40 with the basic script.

If I leave it to detect optimizations automatically no matter which script I use it goes at 8fps. It's wierd as hell.

I don't currently use 64-bit apps as a good majority of the filters I use aren't compiled for use with 64-bit. Else I would try it out.

Doesn't matter. A year goes fast, and then ChronoCross will sit on a mediocre average CPU, with almost everyone else running faster, forcing him to spend money again ... :D

lol didee. Yeah too bad this is my last new computer for at least 3 years. but yeah I hope we can figure out why it's not auto detecting the optimizations. Oh also for some reason mencoder has the same slow speed even the athlon 64 optimized versions from celtic_druid are affected.

If you use the x264 cli, does it list all the cpu capabilities correctly? i.e. like this:
avis [info]: 704x576 @ 25.00 fps (61366 frames)
x264 [info]: using cpu capabilities MMX MMXEXT SSE SSE2 3DNow!

If x264's cpuid is working correctly, I might rip out xvid's cpu detection and make a small test program for you. This is quite intriguing.

I don't understand what you are talking about. What kind of optimizations and where to set them up? I use Virtualdubmod, my own AVS and Xvid Koepi latest beta from here http://roeder.goe.net/~koepi/xvid.shtml. Is this something you add in the AVS?

I have a 2400+, I think it will change nothing for me ;) but just curious.

yeah x264 works fine.

As I recall though XviD has always autochecked the correct boxes for me.

the problem isn't really checking the boxes. it seems to do that fine. but then again it checked all the boxes when I was still running my P3. but now it just doesn't seem to activate the optimizations unless selected manually. like I said there is a distinct 3x difference between manual selection and default selection.

If it autochecked all the boxes on a PIII then it's not working fine.

it autochecked ALL boxes including sse2 and 3dnow on my old p3.

I've yet to encounter any performance issues with my AMD X2 4600+.

I get the same performance whether I force CPU opts. or let Xvid do it automatically. Turning off SSE2 doesn't change performance either.

I'm using Celtic Druid's October 16th build.

I get all boxes checked here, but then they are supposed to be checked. Just tried on an old Athlon and SSE/SSE2 are not checked so it seems to be working fine.
