Hi all, I am converting a 1.85AR R4 dvd Encino Man (California man is the name on the opening credits) to 16:9. But when I measure the picture on my pc screen with a ruler the AR is 1.69, this seems to look right when watching it though as car wheels are almost round. If I try to make it 1.77 or 1.85 the wheels get flattened.
I would like to get your opions or experience on this, any info would be good. Like is it normal for this to happen etc. Thanks

According to imdb, R1 is 1.85:1...

The reason it measures out as 1.69:1 on the TV is because there's more picture off to the sides that you can't see. It's lost because of the TV's overscan.
One good way to get the correct Aspect Ratio is to use GKnot to crop and resize.

I have only been using my pc monitor to check the AR, it is a LCD monitor if that makes a difference?
Also how much does a TV overscan? is it the same on the sides as it is on the top and bottom?
I was cropping it with VDmod (have never used GKnot yet) the dimensions are 704 x 448 (pixels have been added to the sidea to make it 720 wide) when cropped which it is 1.57. But if I use these figures the final picture (using the car wheels) does not look right.
At the moment if I keep a border of 20pixels on the left & right sides (and none on the top or bottom) it keeps it close to the original AR, by using a ruler on my monitor to check it.
Thanks for your replys please keep the info coming!

If you are not sure of the AR..... Take an still frame from the DVD (from a scene that is well lit, so you can see the black mattes) and upload it here!
Don't try to correct the AR before uploading.... leave it "as is"!

Oh, my mistake. I didn't read carefully enough. I apologize. There's no overscan on a monitor. Software DVD players play on monitors with a slight AR error, but not enough, I don't think, to turn 1.85:1 into 1.69:1. The movie may not have been a true 1.85:1 movie to begin with. Or when made into the DVD it may have been cropped or otherwise turned into a slightly different Aspect Ratio.
Evidently the DVD is PAL widescreen, non-anamorphic 4:3. Plugging your crop figures into GKnot, I get 704x416, which agrees with your 1.69:1. However, to get a low Aspect Error, you'll have to crop a few pixels into the video, how much and where depending on whether you use the ITU resizing or not (I do).
But if I use these figures the final picture (using the car wheels) does not look right
That's from the unresized DVD. When resized for AVI, the wheels will be round again. I'm assuming you're going to convert it to AVI.
If you're interested, here's a review of your DVD:

Cool I would like to get an opinion on it http://www.badongo.com/pic.php?file=Encino+original+720+x+576__2005-10-22_encino_orig_720x576.jpg

Thanks for your reply. I am converting it back to dvd I have a widescreen tv and hate watching my dvd's on it if they are not 16:9 widescreen. I did a test to see what it would look like on the tv and I could not see any black lines. I cropped the edges and added 20p to the left and right sides and resized to 720x576. If this turns out to be the correct borders/resize I will be happy with the outcome as I won't have to crop any of the picture.

Your still image looks like it was taken from a 4:3 "Standard" frame DVD source. With the image having an "Aspect Ratio" of between 1.77:1 - 1.85:1..... After cropping away the black mattes, you are left with 446 vertical image pixels!
Cheers
