View Full Version : Burning images onto a regular data DVD

I'm at my University and all my PC games were left at home. So I made images of them all to play on my PC. However I'm finding that I need space sometimes so I occasionally have to delete an image which is several GBs in size.
However I tried burning them onto a data DVD (using Deep Burner) and if the image is small enough (let's say 700 MB for an old CD game) it works. But big images will tend to screw up my computer. When I try to load the image from a DVD onto a virtual drive (the big ones) my computer window will freeze up and there's no way to close it (not even thru ctrl alt delete).
What could I do to fix this? I've been reading about ImgBurn..does that burn an entire image onto a disc so it basically becomes a copy of the orginal? Or would it wind up like my data DVDs (several disc images on one DVD)?

huh? if you're loading your image directly from your dvd-rom to a virtaul-cd, it's pretty much the same idea of making a backup copy (cd/dvd aside)
what i do "meaning" i usually just get a dvd full of images and drag the game(s) i want to play onto my HD and load it from there (faster loading times) or you could try to find a no-cd hack/patch* for the game, or purchase a bigger HD
maybe it didn't freeze, maybe it's just taking a while to load the entire image (i just saying)
judging from the name, it does as the name says, it makes backup copies
* this is not a recommendation for warez, but a cd bypass

If it is taking a while to load my image it usually freezes up my computer. I usually do copy and paste the images of the disc I want to play onto my harddrive and delete it when I'm done. But it's usually a hassle. So I've been trying to do the first option I guess. Load many images onto one DVD and have the image load from the DVD and play it. (though I think it might be to many steps).
I was just curious if it had an effect..

It should work the same whether the image is on your hard drive or the DVD-ROM, it should only take a little longer to mount the image from the DVD. If you can copy the image to the hard drive and it works, that eliminates the possibility of a corrupt DVD. When you say "big images will tend to screw up my computer," of what source are the images that they're bigger than a CD-ROM (700 MB)?

just a though, but does your virtual program support dvd-rom images?

Yes, it does support DVD images. Big images are images that are several GBs in size. Sometimes I can fit 3 of them onto a data DVD though then it usually won't work. It loads but then it freezes up explorer.
Though I think it might work better if I just burn one image per disc. Though I'm just curious if it makes a difference?

I'm not familiar with your program, but I've used images many times before and never needed to worry that there were several on the same disk or in the same directory. It could be a unique problem to your particular software.

I'm using Alcohol 120%. I'll try taking the disc home with me and see if it works at home on the computers installed with Daemon Tools.
