Rule 12:
Do not ask "what's best" because this question cannot be answered objectively. Each and everyone has their own view about what's best in a certain area. The best is what works best for you!

Same question, different wording.
One of the reasons for Rule 12 is that no one can know what looks good to you. There are also many variables that affect output quality, starting with the size of the movie. You'll just have to try some of the various programs yourself and see what works best for you.

Surely it's up to the moderators to decide what is and isn't a breach of the rules and down to them to point it out.
The question could be better phrased as "what is your preferred DVD backup software?" or something. I would say that re-encoding with DVD Rebuilder and an encoder such as CCE SP, HC or QuEnc offers greater quality than a transcoding tool such as DVD Shrink.

It's up to the Moderators to decide when a rule has been breached to the point of requiring administrative action, but we certainly are not the only members who are allowed to point out behaviour or actions that run afoul of said rules. I, for one, welcome help from well-respected members that make a point of dropping in frequently to lend us a hand here in Noobs. It's also, IMO, an indicator of how seriously the old hands take the privilege of being able to participate in Doom9's fabulous digital playhouse.
A1M asked a variation of this same question in this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=101444) just a few days ago, and while some might think it nitpicky to point out the lack of a concise thread title, or the superlative reference to "best, easiest", etc., these are the rules and we all have to abide by them. I could give a long-winded explanation on why I think the rules are set up this way, but wait a minute! That's what we have the Forum Rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm) for, isn't it? :)
[/End speech, back to the real stuff!]
A1M--You said at the end of your last thread (see 1st link, above) that you were going to try Dvd95Copy. Did you do so, and if you did, what were your results?
I always point a beginner to DVD Shrink; it's freeware, is well-documented, has excellent guides hosted on several sites, and is so easy to set up and use that it still amazes me after all this time. Yes, you can squeeze a higher quality encode out of several other app's, but the higher the quality, the steeper the learning curve. If you want a good clean rip in as little as two hours of setup and transcoding, give Shrink a go.
Get some software, get a guide, and set up a rip. I guarantee you'll receive more help than you can handle once you post a specific question on a specific ripping app. When you get to that point, go ahead and start a new thread with a title that describes your dilemma; this one is getting a bit tracked up. That's not to say I don't want you to post again in this thread; all discussion is welcome as long as we treat each other with respect and the courtesy that the (once again) Forum Rules demand.
