View Full Version : Having weird problem decoding audio

I'm trying to re-encode the audio for an avi file by using virtualdubmod and using full processing mode and encoding the audio to CBR instead of VBR. Anyways, when I try to do this, or even playback the avi in virtualdubmod it says:

Error initializing audio stream decompression: The requested conversion is not possible.

Check to make sure you have the required codec.

Okay, so I fire up gspot to find out what codec I'm dealing with and it identifies it as "0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3" and says I have 3 compatible codecs installed: Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (advanced), LAME MP3 Codec v0.9.0 - 3.96 (stable), and MPEG Layer-3 Decoder. It sounds to me like I have what's needed to decompress the audio and I've done a lot of re-encoding of audio with my current codecs, this is the first time I've had a problem and I'm stumped. Any ideas about why this might not be working?

First, demux your audio stream with VdubMOD. Then reencode it eventually with an appropriate tool like BeSweet or anything else...

@chanser69

Hi!

Have you successfully played the .AVI with ANY software player?

1) Load the original video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

Yeah thats the thing, it works fine in other players. Here's what vdubmod says...

also, I can't demux the audio. The audio was encoded with an improper VBR header so the audio is skewed. I am re-encoding the entire avi with a direct stream copy for the video and re-encoding the audio to a CBR. If I demux the audio I end up with an mp3 that claims to be the length of the avi but actually ends a minute too short.

I've got the exact same issue on a file. Did you get your issue figured out?

I have the same issue. I can't play or encode any mp3 streams within avi files in virtualdub but I can in other players. I get the same file information screen.

Does virtualdub 1.6.16 have a problem with with playing mp3? I read dark hints about a licensing issue on another forumn.

Some suggestions:

Try "AVIMux GUI", it will allow you to extract the audio portion from the avi file. I usually to this, then using nero (smart start) I transcode the mp3 to a wav file (It has worked on some wav's that BeSweet chokes up on) and then I use BeSweet to make an ac3 out of the wav. It's a lot of steps, but I keep a decent volume on the final file.
