BTW single pass bitrate control with insane mode gives excellent quality at lower bitrates where 2 pass was a must earlier.

@ChronoCross: Q-Pel requires more effort in the motion search, and Insane mode is fully RD enabled. This combination will undoubtedly run much slower than H-Pel and Insane.

@SimonSez07: 1-Pass, Target Quantizer will be just like constant-quality except where the bitrate exceeds the capability of a DivX Certified device at the given profile level (e.g. Home Theater), in which case the quantizer will be temporarily raised. The trick to maintaining consistent quality is to try encoding a short but representative sample of the source material at a bitrate that gives you the quality you desire, and then look for the average quantizer value in the encoder feedback window. This will ensure that you get the quality you want with very few (if any) rises in quantizer due to VBV constraints, and that you aren't wasting too much bandwidth by simply guestimating at a target quantizer that is lower than you actually need to use.

you've misunderstood me. premiere won't even start. it hangs on the startup screen (on 'CompilerVfW'). reverting to divx6 helps.

what you're saying makes sense. (but not sure how to use 'feedback window') when you say "try encoding short sample at bitrate that gives you the quality you desire" im assuming you mean using 2-pass vbr. and since i disable certification profiles, bitrate constraints do not apply right?

anyway, i just encoded alias season 3 with the new codec using target quant = 3 and it turned out great quality (at least compared to divx 5.2.1 that i have been using) even with pq set to 'high performance'

although i was dissapointed to be unable to output a log file while encoding one-pass mode.

Can I use DIVX-HE 3 to encode 'movies' because frankly i am getting better quality with divx 6 codec

Figured out my avi.NETproblem. It passes on only the bitrate to the codec
Not true.

Anyway, the problem was the divx helium codecs in any form were NOT supported by avi.NET, which is why it was 'fluffing'.

Though the new HE-3 codec and future versions are now supported as of the last few days.
