Hi All

I think that i read somewhere, that someone is doing a vst for 5.1 ac3 to use with Plogue Bidule that has a switch so that you can change the settings from music to movie (for speech in films)

I have been trying for ages to get the settings right, but not done it yet!

So if this vst has been done, i would like to try it out :D

Thanks

Howard

Nice, but is there a particular reason why i need to "install V.I version 0.500 along with the accompanying II plugin and Plogue Bidule layouts" ? Or is it just to have a complete installation?

EDIT oops, posted in wrong thread :(.

Yes, it's just for those who don't have the earlier installation. the new dll will work fine on its own.

Hi

Thanks for that link to you'r new vst
I have placed it into my vst plugin folder
but now when i run Bidule and open the layout
5.1_V.1-VST_ursamtl_041127.bidule, the new
converter is loaded, but then a box opens up saying

"Some parameters could not be loaded"

and it has an OK button when i clik it the box go away
and the prog bidule stays running

what can the prob be ?

anyway just about to try it out, will get back in a bit

Yes, I've seen that message too. It doesn't seem to affect anything. I believe it's because I created the layouts on an older version of Plogue Bidule. I'll try to do new layouts this weekend. In the meantime, everything should work. Just click ok to the message and continue. If you do run into problems, let me know.

Hi Steve

yeah it seems to work ok
i think that the LFE output is abit low, in level :(
I like the movie mode, it brings up the dilog ok :D

is there a way to up the level of the LFE ?

In the 5.1 window, the LFE level slider is set to 0.0
also the LFE limiting threshold is set at 0.850000, is this 85hz ?
for movies should this not be set for 0.12000 (120hz) ?

Sorry if i sound a bit dim about these things but i'am just starting
to learn :stupid:

@radiomans

Search for Plogue Bidule in this forum and you will find a long thread that was placed as a sticky I believe in it Steve explains the settings. 0.85 is not HZ that is linear value if you reduce it, it compresses it and it will actual raise the level for the LFE. Having done myself plenty of work with this excellent VST for DLPII upmix to 5.1 what I have usually done for the LFE is open it up in Sound Forge or some other soundtrack editor and normalized the LFE track. Then take the 6 mono files and encode them into DD 5.1

@radiomans

As f@chance explained, it's simply the value that Bidule displays to represent what's going on the with Classic Limiter VST plugin that's inside the bidule group. The limiter works in two steps. First, it limits the sound peaks so that they don't exceed 0dB and clip the waveforms (distorting the sound). Second, moving the slider control to the left takes the range of levels between the lowest sound and the loudest and compresses it. The end result is that softer sounds get louder while the loudest sound remain the same. The end result when used on bass frequencies is generally tighter, stronger bass.

Be careful with this! Go to the following link and scroll down to the section entitled LFE?: GUIDE: V.I Stereo to 5.1 Converter and II Surround Generator VST plugins (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=570432#post570432). It is extremely easy to ruin an otherwise good conversion by overdoing the LFE channel. You might think it sounds great while you're monitoring it, but then once you convert to 5.1, burn to a disc and listen on a surround system, the whole thing sounds terrible! Even listening for too long to the same project can cause "acoustic aberrations." Your ears get desensitized to the frequency changes, etc., and what sounded great one day, ends up sounding horrible a day or two later. It's often better to avoid the LFE altogether. If your source is a full range recording, then leave everything in the five main channels and let your playback system's bass management circuit decide what's in the LFE channel. You can always turn a bass control up on your playback system, but once there's too much bass, the resulting distortion can ruin it all. The limiter only works on the wave file you write. Too much bass in the conversion process to AC3 or DTS could conceivably mess with the compression algorithms and give you a disappointing end result. I only put the LFE feature in V.I to provide a means of adding some bass to material (mainly older musical stuff) that was lacking in bass.

Anyway, experiment with this stuff and see how it turns out. Before long, you'll be producing some excellent conversions!

Regards,
Steve.

When I look at the LFE it usually is only in a few spots that you have a presence. I let my amplifier decide where the frequency cut off is. Often too high of a level in the LFE will also cause it to pop very loud which is not what you want.

Steve it is a marvelous little gadget that enhances the audio tracks. Just on a side note. I have laid my hands on some HDTV Transport stream footage ABC broadcast, no prizes for what show :p and I thought the column was too low. However when played back over the system and cranking up the volum, it was fantstic, good surround ambience and front stage presence. Learned a lot just in the few months that I started to mess with PB, thanks to an ever so self sacrificing individual in this forum. No not you Daphy :p

Both Daphy and @ndy have sacrificed tons of time to keep their Needfulthings server available to us surround freaks! :)

The layouts are now updated for use with Bidule v 0.9 and the message no longer appears. You can get the latest ones at V.I VST Bidule Layouts (http://stevethomson.ca/audio/guides/V.I-VST_Bidule_layouts.zip).

Steve.
