Is it possible to create a dvd with avi files in its original format without converting them. Is there a program or encoder software that can be burned on the DVD that allows playback of the AVI files?

I would like the avis that are burned onto a DVD to be able to be read by stand-alone players. Thats why i was wondering if someone had some software out there that allowed the avi to be decoded through the stand-alone player.

And I'd like some software to turn water into wine...

You have 3 options:
1) Buy a standalone that supports avis (and even then you can have compatibility issues, like E-Male mentioned).
2) Convert
3) Put on some red lipstick, a black miniskirt, and do without watching the content on a standalone

the dvd-video standard doesn't include using codecs from discs

getting a cheap pc instead of a standalone is the best option to avoid cnversions

Purple is a bit too goth for my liking. Also, like breasts, red lips are something that men naturally find attractive, so red lipstick is the most 'normal' IMO.

A cheap pc requires tv-out, there is potential background noise, etc so that has its annoyances too...but of course it's great from the perspective of compatibility :)

too bad that perfect solutions are unavaible in reality...

There is a 4th option too --

Get a DVD Standalone Recorder and play the avi out through the firewire link into the Recorder (assuming it has firewire input). Use the "Video2dv" program. I tried it recently and it works great. You can even use .avs files, but you have to use VFAPI to convert to fake avi, then load fake avi into Video2dv. Works great!
