Hi i am using virtual dub for my image sequence of the game unreal tournament to make a movie out of it. out of all the footage i have from my game playing. i have dumped so far about 11,000 screenshots. this is my image sequence that i will eventually save as an avi in VD. but these screenshots are saved at 1024x768 and thats not the resolution i want my avi to be. i would like it to be smaller because it plays better and it smaller in size. should i resize all my screenshots? or would i resize the avi ?
if i should resize all the images first then process it as a movie what program can do batch image resizing? rather then resizing every image seperatly. paint wont do it i tried...
anyways thanks for your help
btw im banned from own-age.com and i know that there is usefull info there. but cant go there even though how to make gaming movies might better be posted there instead of here. these forums are not so far off this topic

1) Download IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/).
2) Put all the images to be resized in a folder (e.g: c:\pics) [Keep a backup, just in case].
3) Now open Notepad.exe and type in the following:
i_view32.exe c:\pics\*.jpg /resize=(X,Y) /convert=c:\pics\*.jpgwhere X = target width and Y = target height. I have assumed that the files are in JPEG format, if not, name accordingly.
4) Now save the file as 'resize.bat' and put it in the folder where you have IrfanView installed (e.g: C:\Program Files\IrfanView).
5) Double-click 'resize.bat', done.

irfanview looks like a handy easy to use program the batch conversion/rename is awsome to bad it doesnt have batch resize
how would i go about resizing about 10,000 bmp's using VD. trust me i have been reading the manual. but the manual tells you what things do not how to do them

thanks again man. i didnt even know about all those options.
but what is the difference if any of those 2 methods of sizing other than the speed. any difference in compression or loss of data between the 2 methods?

The instructions I gave was for batch resizing..
oh i know...i meant that within irfanview out of the big visible options batch resize is omitted even though it can actually perform the task
and i used it and worked fine thanks to you

ok so i have been learning about resizing using Vdub i think i understand hpw it works using VD..however i have benn hesitant to use it because i am uncertain whether the process OVERWRITES the original frames. i want my source frames of 1024x768 to be unaltered.
in VB does the output frames go into a different folder thus not overwriting the input source? if so i see no location to specify such a folder for the resultant resized output images to go into...

File>>Save as - Use a NEW filename

I'm confused... you wanted to save as AVI right? So why save a new image sequence?
anyway, if you want to output new bitmaps go to file --> save as image sequence.
VirtualDub cannot overwrite source files.

I use a shareware application called JPGAvi (http://www.ndrw.co.uk/) to convert still images to full motion video... The applications name does not do it full justice as it's capable of handling more than just Jpeg images: -
http://www.ndrw.co.uk/guides/jpgavi/screenshots/screenshot_fullsize.gif
The useful thing about JPGAvi is it's ability to re-size the images for you and create full motion video at any fps you require (although it does now come with some handy pre-sets)

not just yet im not trying to save the avi yet im just rezising my images. i still have a lot of footage to go through before i save as avi. and even before that i want to delte some frames/scenes
so i was just wondering if VD would allow me to just rezise my image sequence without doing an overwrite of threm all.

unskinny boys method is surefire since in his instructions he says to create a new folder. i did that and i copied all 10,000+ bmp's into it and thats the folder that got resized as a batch not the source folder of my 1024x768s

im sure VD should be able to do this but in a different way. its just that i am still getting used to VD and the method to accomplish this goal wasnt obvious to me via the way the the VD message windows work+the content of the windows

11,000 images is a hell of a lot of images.... At 25 frames per second this would equate to 7 hours and 20 minutes worth of video!
I can't imagine anybody wanting to watch that lot ;)
EDIT: How many frames per second do you want to encode at?

but i finally played all the newly resized images in vd and yep it played smoother and not as choppy. but i did notice a difference looks like the newly rezised images lost sharpness. i guess thats due to compression. i will use Uleads sharpness feature for that i think.
other than watching images in a sequence and then converting them to an avi or resizing the sequence what is another popular use for VD?

something is amiss because i so far only have about 10 minutes total. and i want my finaly product to be about 15 min long.
what do you recommend for fps 29.97 or 25?

what do you recommend for fps 29.97 or 25?Well.... as I live in a PAL land, I prefer PAL. Not least because it's better at handling progressive and interlaced content at the same frame rate... ie: 25fps
Bye the way.... How many MB's worth of images do you have?

um...27.4 gigabytes so far. my target duration is 15 minutes so i still have much more images to dump/render.
at what point in the the whole process (i.e cliking file>open video file>cliking the image sequence) should i choose my framerate of 25 fps? like do i do that before or after i clik the play button in virtual dub? also once the image sequence is in vd and ready to be played. does that compress the sequence once you hit play?
i dont think it does. so then what exactly accounts for the choppiness? the game itself has a playback feature that allows you to play the demo exactly how you viewed it at the time of capturing (i.e no choppiness) so why is the playback in VD choppy even before you do anything to it?
