DV to DVD = Flickering

I recently edited some of my clips in Premier. Exported to AVI with WAV. Convertered AVI to MPEG2 with TMPGEnc 3 Xpress and transcoded WAV to AC3 with BeSweet.

Burnt and all is well however on my tv it seems to almost flicker. It makes the smallest shake that looks fine on my computer looks super shaky on the TV and is flickering.

I know its hard to say, but Im hoping someone can give me a starting point as to what might cause this?

field order is wrong...

DVD by default is top field first, but can handle bottom-first.
DV is bottom-field first always.

download ReStream, uncheck "top field first", save the stream, re-author and re-burn. should only be half an hour's work :)

to prevent this happening again, either edit the way you always do and simply tell TMPGenc that field order is bottom-first, or encode the way you always do and move your DV clips up by 1 line (this will swap odd fields with even fields, effectively changing the field order).

IMHO DV is stupid to be bottom field first. everything else out there is top first. NTSC is a little difficult because some formats are 480 lines, top-first and some are 486 lines, bottom-first. by cropping the 486 lines by 3 on the top and bottom, you get 480, top-first as if by magic :)

because DV is now the prosumer standard for editing, most editing programs work in bottom-first by default, which makes a mess when people edit together DV and broadcast in the same timeline... it also means that every project is pretty much guaranteed to have wrong field-order in it somewhere (and i'm the guy that has to fix it, or put up with deinterlaced stuff that looks even worse just because some editor was too lazy to fix their mistake so they made another one).

sorry, i'm ranting now :). i should stop working on music DVDs, as they tend to have the worst problems both video and audio wise. the guys that make these things just don't have a clue.

As a first time poster on the board, never having contributed, I really appreciate your in depth response. You just dont get that one many forums these days without all the "Search n00b" posts.

I did some re-editing so Im going to just re-encode with bottom field first like you said.
