Problems with VirtualDub

hello, i am trying to capture some vhs tapes and convert them to dvd but when doing so in VirtualDub i do not get any sound output and the playback of the video is really choppy.

my system specs are:

p4 3ghz
1gb ram
radeon 9800 pro
creative sb live sound card
120gb hd

for the capture device i am using the adaptec videoh usb set.

any help with this? :/

Exactly what model videoh are you using? According to the pages I've seen, the videoh range apart from the most basic one all contain hardware mpeg2 encoders. If you have one with hardware MPEG/2, virtualdub doesn't make sense as a capture tool. Using something such as this (http://www.shspvr.com/smf/index.php?topic=7680.0) would make a lot more sense.
