When i play an avi file on my divx compatible standalone dvd player, it plays full screen even though the avi file is widescreen. Is this a setting that needs to be changed on the dvd player or can i add horizontal black bars to the avi file before i burn to dvd? Any help would be great.

We will need more information than this.... Such as: -
Your encodes pixel frame size, your player type and your TV shape!
A still frame image taken from your encode would help too!

Thanks for the reply. Tv is widescreen, DVD player is Tevion QS808. As for pixel size do you mean 576x304, 23.976fps?

When 576 is divided by 304 gives a pixel frame AR of around 1.89:1. So given your TV has an AR of 1.7777:1 (aka:16:9) the image will fill your screen - as some of the image will be lost to over-scan!
That said, I would still like to see a still frame image taken from your encode, in order to determine whether it contains any black mattes!
Most software based players offer a "capture image" option. And you can upload your image to the forum using say, http://tinypic.com/ or http://www.imageshack.us/

The image you provided is 576x324 pixels, which gives a pixel frame AR of around 1.777:1.
The reason why you don't see the small mattes above and below the image is due to the over-scan your TV produces....
By-the-way... you'll also loose some of the image horizontally due to the over-scan too!
Cheers
