I'm redoing Six Feet Under, but this has happened with all the other HBO shows I have redone also(Sopranos, Band of Brothers, etc). The problem is in the menu section. On playback it will play fine, until it gets to the menu screen where the episode selection is highlighted with episode 1, 2, or 3. As soon as I press enter on the remote, or even the play button, it's as though I've hit the stop button. I can start the shows with the title selection on the remote after that and the shows play fine. The reason I'm listing it here in hardware is because this happens on my dvd player(Sony DVP-NC655P) and on my fathers dvd player(Sony DVP-315SP), but these discs play perfectly fine on my daughters player(a $50 junky Memorex with no model number labeled). It plays fine in IFOEdit and on the computer dvd player. I've done the VTS sectors in ifoedit, previewed the playback in ifoedit with no problems. I use dvd decrypter to remove the puop's, structure protection and the rc and rce protection, and I've also tested it with leaving these unchecked. I don't know enough about the ifo structure to know if these is something I can fix with IFO Edit or not, or if it's just the set top players that are causing the problems. I've looked for similar threads with not much luck. I appreciate any feedback. Mod please move if this is an ifo problem or just general, I couldn't figure where exactly to post. Thanks

Do the originals exhibit the same behaviour when played on the two SONYs?

No, the originals are fine. It's strange how it's just the HBO shows. Probably should add that I use Nero to Recode and also I strip out the warning from the beginning of the disc. I have not tried leaving the warning yet. I'll do that now.

Actually turned out worse. It played the FBI warning, then the HBO thing with all the stars, then stopped. Plays perfectly in the Memorex. I'm beginning to think that it has to be something with the Sony players.

I can tell you from my own experience with a SONY DVP-S360 standalone that I used to own and one I presently have (DVP-NS725P), they can be EXTREMELY finicky about file structure. I have accumulated perhaps 3 dozen backups that play perfectly well on 5 other (different brands) DVDs, but do a multitude of strange things when played on the SONYs - such as playing only the initial 2 seconds of each chapter, freezing after clicking on a menu button, etc.

One of the most curious things I've noticed in this regard is that some of these "SONY-only-problematic" backups were compressed using DVD2One. When I used DVD Shrink instead to compress the same DVDs, the SONYs played them perfectly...

Just to update the problem, I tried the DVD Shrink software that you mentioned. It worked. I don't know what the problem might be with Nero, but if anyone else has this problem, then maybe this will help them too. Thanks for your help setarip.
