Blue Ray/MP4 Main vs High confusion

If I want to encode things to ensure the AVC will play on blue ray, HD-DVD etc, will the "main" profile" in Nero do that? As I understand it, Blue-ray will NOT support the "high" profile" coming out from Nero and currenrlyt in beta in x264.

afaik the specs for hddvd/bluray are not publically available till now, so there is no way to encode a h.264 stream which is compliant for sure to them till now

Under Technical Info -> White Paper you will find "White Paper: BD ROM - Audio Visual Application Format Specifications". On page 17(3.3) you can find you anwser.

My guess is that all Blu-Ray players will play MPEG-4 mp4 files (Part 2 and Part 10 with AAC) just as DVD players today play VCD/SVCD.

Seriously, why support AVC and not AAC?

with this capasity they could use WAVEs and still have space left over so useing aac may be overkill on the compression?

@Elias: where have you found mp4 fileformat support in Blu-Raydisc? They use MPEG2 Part 1(13818-1): System - Transport Stream with Part 10 AVC. So there is also no MPEG4 Part 2 ASP support.

so both will NOT use .mp4

about aac: hd-dvd has mandatory support for he-aac in the rom zone (whatever this means), which means every hd-dvd player has to be able to play he-aac

still both bluray and hd-dvd do NOT use aac for the normal video content

so whether aac+avc-in-mp4 will play in coming players is not sure at all and only speculation
