View Full Version : Fast Motion DV - Which deinterlacer? (50i->25p)

There's so many AviSynth deinterlacers around now that I don't know what's what :confused:

Anyway, the video has a lot of panning and fast motion (it's paintball, and the video is mostly shot from a distance), and the shutter speed was pretty fast as it was quite sunny that day. It wasn't a particularly high-end camera so it's kinda blurry as well. What deinterlacer would you guys recommend for this kind of video? I don't want something too CPU-intensive though, as my PC sucks -_-

I need to deinterlace it because I want to convert it to some small downloadable video - probably WMV. I'd give a sample of the video but I don't have it with me right now, so I hope my vague description is enough!

(I was really tempted to say "best" somewhere in this post :D )

If you want to keep the fast motion that is present in the video then I'd suggest that you don't deinterlace it to 25p. It will look very sluggish.

I have a pretty fast CPU so I wouldn't know exactly which deinterlacer would be best for you, but I'd suggest that you try Neuron2's DGBob filter and see how it works for you. It's an older filter that might work better with your CPU.

Yeah, I know, I hate deinterlacing in general, but I need to keep size down to a minimum, not to mention it is intended for people to be able play back on the PCs in my university (some of which are still PII/IIIs, and most have lame graphics cards) which is also the reason why I'm using WMV (student profiles don't allow installing codecs, and they don't usually have QuickTime, XviD or Real on them). Therefore 50fps is out of the question unfortuantely -_-

Yeah, I tried it after looking at your website and realising DGBob's only for bobbing, and looks great! There's still a bit of combing left (just using the default settings), but resizing it down to 512x384 seems to get rid of what little combing is still there anyway.

Reduce the threshold to catch more residual combing. But you do it at the expense of static detail. So make sure you view at normal size and speed to assess it, not zoomed in and single stepping -- people don't watch video like that. :)
