I've been encoding using Nero lately, using standard AVC with AAC 5.1 sound. I've been going back and forth with a friend on how to get this to work with his 5.1 setup in his house. He's concerned that he will not get 5.1 sound from these files.

I'm using one of the FFDshow builds from here, so it's relatively new (10/12 I believe) and messing around with the audio stuff has me a little confused. I've been trying to get him to "just try it", but he's trying to think it through while we sit at work heheh.

So basically, will this work? AVC/AAC 5.1 > FFDshow > SPDIF so he gets 5.1 through his receiver. If so, any idea how to set it up? Looks to me like you'd just set the global output to AC3, but I'm a total n00b when it comes to 5.1 stuff.

Should work, but then I've never tried it since one of my sound cards does hardware encoding (dolby live).

you should choose "AC3" in ffdshow's audio output section.
