AVI problem...but ok with VLC player

Hi

I have an avi which crashes most of the programs I try and open it with, ie:
Media player, VirtualDub, DrDivX, it does however play via the VLC player.

Do you think that this a codec issue or a problem with the file itself? If the problem is a codec, where could I get a suitable one from?

I would really like to to burn the file to a CD/DVD and watch it on a standalone DivX DVD player, so I need to be able to process it in another application.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does virtualDub crash on opening the file, or when trying to play the file?

usually you can find the culprit in the VirtualDub crash report.

They all crash when trying to open the file.

Does MPEG Modifier open it? What does GSpot say about the specs? Also it crashes with VirtualDubMoD and Nandub also along with VirtualDub?

...and most importantly HOW did you get this avi?

Run it under VLC and from the "View" dropdown menu, select and copy "Stream & Media Info" - and post it here...

ok...I've tried some of the suggestions you have posted...

MPEG Modifier crashes when trying to open the file with the error:
"No VOL found before first VOP"

GSpot says that all the codecs are installed and the file should play. There is a lot of info with GSpot, did you mean any particular part of the specs?

It also crashes in VirtualDubMod & Nandub, and I have attached the crash reports.

The VLC Stream & Media info is also attached.

I've tried encoding with the VLC player a couple of times, but am just getting audio. I'll have another play around with that.

I hope that the crash reports etc which are attached, give you some info about the problem, because they do not mean much to me !!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As per Moitah here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=704272#post704272), "No VOL found before first VOP" indicates that the video was cut thru a non-keyframe (possibly cut with some substandard video splitter tool), which is probably the reason why the other players crash because they expected an I-frame at the beginning of the video and didn't get it. VLC doesn't need all of a video to be able to play it, which is why probably it plays in VLC (also the reason why you are able to use VLC for viewing partially downloaded video files), but seeking might suffer.

Can you try and 'repair' the avi? This (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=100326) thread might help you.

The crash is in the DivX decoder, you might wanna try another one like ffdshow.
