Complete windows crash when encoding with xvid 1.1b2

Hi

I've been trying to encode a DVD with xvid 1.1b2 (Keopi), but it keeps crashing on me, and windows completely locks up (mouse doesnt move, alt-ctrl-del does nothing).

Im using avisynth 2.5.5, gordian knot 0.35, dgmpdec 1.4.5 final, virtualdubmod 1.5.10.2

It crashes ~20% into the first pass.

Not sure what exactly causes it, but im guesing xvid. I tried reinstalling xvid and avisynth etc. Any help appreciated. If u need another log file that ive left out let me know.

More info: It has done the same thing for other sources too, nvidia ti4200, amd athlon 2600+, 512mb ram, win xp, avisynth script plays fine and looks fine in vd.

I'm guessing that it isn't XviD since 1,000's of people would have run 1,000's of encodes by now with 1.0b2 and none of their systems froze.

I'd suggest that you check your memory and temperature.

Its not temp or memory tho... This is the only time its ever happened...

xvid 1.0 encodes have worked fine in the past...

Run torture test. This app will test you memory and cpu and general system for instability. You should be able to run torture test for at least 16 hours if you pc is stable.
Prime95 Will either give you an error or simply crash your system if it's unstable.

I run a lot of CPU/Memory/Disk intensive operations on my PC and its never done this before. Its not a result of my system being unstable.

Computer components become of age like everything else does. I.e. capacitators are very "fragile". They work well for a year and become unusable from one day of another (there are a LOT of capacitators on a mainboard).

You definatly should at least run another test for some hours.

A system that freezes is unstable. I concur strongly with celtic_druid on that. XviD dooesn't access low level resources and it's very hard for an application to crash windows in such a way when low level resources are left untouched.

i'm a member of the 2cpu forum for a long time, and just fyi it is well known to us over there that a computer passing all those stress tests and mem tests doesn't mean jack. we've seen many people pass those tests for hours, while a simple encode will either crash or cause the pc to freeze/reboot in a random manner.

i've experienced that on my own system...

i donno if you o/c or not, but i suggest u thoroughly examine ur system which can include taking parts out, trying to boot windows w/o any startup programs running, try to use vdub and not gk, etc...

I'm sure that my hardware is fine, as i have said, I run other CPU/Memory intensive tasks all the time, and havent had any problems. I might run some tests tho just to check it out.

It is reproduceable, every time I try to encode a DVD source with xvid 1.1 though avisynth it crashes and does the same thing. I might narrow down what is actually causing it, try encoding a few avi's in vdub, then try a few avisynth filters etc..

I dont OC, and nothing has ever caused my system to crash like this bfore.

Try another CPU intensive VFW Codec, like x264. Do precisely the steps that caused your PC to lockup before with Xvid, just choose x264 as the encoder. If it locks up or doesn't, you'll know.

Well i just re-encoded an avi with xvid 1.1 using the same settings in vdub and it worked fine, then I tried again using an avisynth filter to crop and resize the same source and the encoding locked up again.

So it must be something to do with avisynth. What is the question... What should i try? The avs file plays back fine in WMP and looks fine in vdub, so i dont know what the deal is.

I might try just a plain avs file with avisource and nothing else, and see if it still crashes.

show us the script you used when it didn't crash and the script that caused the crashing.

this points me to be believe it's your avisynth that's crashing it, maybe you got a bad dll or something...

did u try to reinstall it? did you try previous versions? latest version?

-open avs file with crop and lanczosresize and encode = crash

Crop and lanczosresize are internal filters right?...

I have tried reinstalling and installing 2.5.5 before, but it didnt do anything. I have just installed 2.5.6, so ill try that.

Maybe im resizing to an invalid size for xvid. What are the restrictions for xvid?

I am testing re-encoding a xvid encoded movie that is split into 2 700MB avi's.

- Test 1: Open 1.avi in vdubmod and append 2.avi, encode with xvid 1.1
Result: Worked fine.
- Test 2: Open plain.avs in vdubmod, encode with xvid 1.1
Result: Worked fine.
- Test 3: Open cropresize.avs in vdubmod, encode with xvid 1.1
Result: Crashed.
- Test 4: Uninstalled avisynth 2.5.5, installed avisynth 2.5.6. Open resize.avs in vdubmod, encode with xvid 1.1
Result: Crashed.

Settings: Fast recompress in vdubmod, audio disabled, 2pass xvid encode using settings in first post.

I dont think it is the same frame, it has crashed at various different positions.
The PC locks up with a mouse/keyboard/everything freeze, requiring a reboot every time.

Yeah, if u look at the top I was originaly trying to encode a DVD source. Its done the same thing for 2 DVD sources, and the avi's im using to test the problem.

use cropping with modulo 8 or 16

EDIT: I have no problems when cropping modulo 2 inside ffdshow in VDM
but when cropping from VDM filters then modulo 8 or 16 should be used

Why are you talking about cropping? It still crashes even when I dont crop. It seems to be the resizing that is the problem.

Sorry ppl, it seems my system was unstable. I've been able to get my system to crash using Prime95 and other CPU intensive programs. Maybe Lanczos resize loads the CPU up that bit extra...

Must have been a very recent development. Maybe a power surge or something that fried my CPU.

yep, as i stated, you can run all the stress tests in the world and they can all pass, but as soon as you do a simple xvid encode it can crash...

xvid encoding is a great tool to test stability of an overclock...

Guess what? I found out that it only does this when my DDR400 ram is set to 200mhz, when its set the 166mhz it does the crashing thing. Now I dont have to buy a new processor (not that it would have cost much to replace a athlon 2600+ with a sempron.)
