View Full Version : Specific scenes to uncompressed movie files

Hi,
Forgive me if this has been asked before but I did search the forum and try a few different methods but I havent found exactly what I was looking for.
Im trying to grab specific scenes from different DVD's without compressing them (or at least without losing much if any video quality) and save them as video files (either mpeg/avi/mov, etc). Perhaps getting them to those formats naturally requires compression and thats the missing piece of info that Im missing.
Using various programs Ive been able to rip specific scenes off as video files with lower video quality (using ImToo) and rip scenes w/o compression but only into DVD ready format (using DVD Shrink).
Id like to be able to watch the scenes on my computer as well as be able to compile them onto a DVD with the same video quality. Is this possible?
Thanks in advance.

Umm, sorry. Your nick says 'Pirate' so we will assume that you are a movie pirate and won't help you. You will also be banned within the hour.
heh, j/k.
So what was your question again? You want to grab specific scenes from a DVD and still retain quality? Only way to do it is to cut the scenes from the VOB files and save them as smaller VOB files (Google for 'ChopperXP'). There is no way you can convert them to other formats and not compress it in one way or the other, unless you wanna just rename the extension! If you want to compress in an optimal way, walk over to the Doom9 front page and check out the guides listed. There are better ways to do the conversion than ImToo and DVDShrink (provided you have the time and energy to invest, that is..).

haha thanks... yeah the name was more a reference to actual pirates and a band i used to be in but i did think after I picked it that it could have different connotations here. :)
Thanks for the advice. To get the Vob files, does that involve ripping the entire dvd? And does renaming the vob files actually allow it to be played in windows video players?
I will check out the compression guides. Thanks again!

Hi!
save them as video files (either mpeg/avi/mov, etc)
To get an uncompressed .AVI:
After "ripping" (decrypting and copying to hard drive) the DVD, simply load it into VirtualDubMOD and set "Video" to "Uncompressed RGB", set your start and end points and save with a new filename...

You bet! ;-)

Yes, rip the DVD to your hard disk using DVD Decrypter in IFO/File mode, pick the needed VOB file which has the scene you want, load into ChopperXP, mark the start and end points and save it by some other name.
And does renaming the vob files actually allow it to be played in windows video players?
I meant the renaming thing as a joke! You don't gain anything by renaming a .vob to an .avi, do you? The filesize remains the same. Most of the players actually recognize the actual content of the videos (recognized usually by the file headers) and play (or not play) them, regardless of the extension you give. Also, when you said "windows video player", you didn't mean WMP, did you? If so, please uninstall it NOW and install a decent player like BSPlayer, ZoomPlayer etc.

No, though I dont have those programs either. I just meant some sort of windows media player whether it was wmp or whatever.
I suppose there's no shortcuts to ripping the whole DVD? Im really just looking for a minute of footage so it seems such a waste of time and hard drive space to get the whole thing. But I will do what needs to be done I suppose. :)

How does this help in any way? The Uncompressed avi will be many times bigger than the original VOB file which he started with.

It is a specific response to the poster's stated desire of obtaining an uncompressed video and "save them as video files (either mpeg/avi/mov, etc)"...

Are there any programs that rip specified scenes straight to the smaller vob files?

You could use DVD Shrink in "Re-author" mode, set your start and end points - and set whatever compression you'd like to experiment with...

Vidomi, dammit! It's a great cropping tool - when Options > General options has "Ignore all settings and use MPEG copy code" checked, the selection is output as unprocessed MPEG-2. Unfortunately it only allows one section at a time to be cropped from the video in this manner, but those clippings can be reloaded into Vidomi and output again as a single file.

Rather than decrypting the whole DVD to the hard drive, you could just rip the specific chapter that contains the scene you want. First play the DVD in PowerDVD or similar and determine the chapter number. Then open the DVD in DVD Decrypter set for IFO Mode. Right-Click on the little Chapters box and "Select None". Then check the box for the chapter you want. After you get the Vob, cut out the scene you want with ChopperXP or another of the cutting tools.

Won't you share with us what you've chosen to do?

Well for now since I know I can use DVD Shrink's reauthoring mode to get the scenes I want into DVD format and ultimately what I wanted to do was put them back onto a DVD anyway, that's all Im doing for now. After I get the scenes I will look into the better compression methods in the guides to convert the scenes I want to the video files from the smaller vob files.
Thanks again!

I have a question that deals with this guys. I rip everything thru dvdshrink but the vob's dont skip. I put them on the xbox, in xbox media center and some vob's skip when i press the > button but some just restart the video all over again. Anyone know why? I figure its the way im ripping but i dont know what im doing different now. The files that i did this with months ago skip easily?!?! Is it some ifo thing? This is just VOB's so how does ifo play into this? Thanks for any help.

Hi -
I am trying to do the same thing PirateChris is doing (extract clips from Multiple DVDs and create a single DVD using the clips)
I have experimented with the DVDShrink method outlined in this and other posts. I have noticed that the created DVD however, results in each clip being its own Title instead of each being it own chapter. This results in (unless I am mistaken) not being able to hit the "next chapter" button to move between scenes. At least it didn't work in PowerDVD. You have to go to the title menu I guess, or wait until one clip finishes until the next one starts.
Is there a way to create a DVD that results in chapters, not titles, being created?
Thanks -
Dave

I don't know blutach. I suppose it's a matter of interpretation. setarip_old is unfailingly polite. Some might consider it good form to reply to a "Thanks again!"with "You're welcome" or similar. Sometimes I do and most times I don't, but I don't think I'd censure anyone for doing that. As for his request that the OP say which method he chose, it might help someone in the future with a similar problem searching for an answer. And setarip_old has enough posts that I don't really think he can be accused of trying to inflate his post count at this point.
