Now that apple released a bunch of high res trailers with 5.1 audio I was going to check it out, but I can't get the surround to work correctly. I have a quadraphonic speaker setup and i've set windows, the creative drivers and the quicktime player to quadraphonic but i get the same audio from all speakers. Is this a bug? I am using quicktime 7 non beta. Windows media files with 5.1 sound works fine.

And when I choose 5.1 sound I get no center at all with a 5.1 speaker setup.

I have this problem too ... :(
So it seem that the apple windows players + filters has this bug ...

My setup is the same: 4+1 speaker, Philips 4 channel soundcard ...

Btw: which player do you use for mov files ? (I'm using mpc.)

I used to use media player classic because there you could get quicktime movies to play without tearing. The audio channels are reversed though. Now when apple switched to H.264 encoding on there trailers I have start using the quicktime 7 player. There is no tearing, but I've noticed that high definition files stutter although the CPU load is only around 80 % and the surround is broken.

I have using MPC too ...

I you select at Quicktime video 'System default' : there is no tearing too ! But the colors no good, there're better colors when you select DirectX7 or 9, but the playback slower here... And the sound is no multichannel ...

Perhaps somebody have to write to apple :)

I get the same problem with surround. Pretty annoying. :(

And interesting is that this problem was on QT 7.0, 7.0.2 and 7.0.3 now. So maybe Apple really doesn't know about it.

OK. Here is the solution for the 4 channel sound problem with apple's HD trailers in MPC + better picture quality + better sound quality !!! Let's see it:

Download and install these (and of course at least MCP 6.4.8.6):
QuickTime Alternative- link (http://filesharingdownloads.com/Codecs/QuickTime_Alternative/quicktimealt166.exe)
AC3Filter 1.01a RC5 - link (http://www.free-codecs.com/AC3_Filter_download.htm)
DynEQ filter - link (http://zahodi.o5.ru/files/dyneq.rar)
Haali Media Splitter - link (http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/MatroskaSplitter.exe)
ffdshow filter - link (http://www.free-codecs.com/FFDShow_download.htm)

In MPC:
- Options -> Player -> Formats : Quicktime - select Directsowh (default Quicktime)
- Options -> Filters : disable MP4 and AAC !
- Options -> Filters -> Overrides : add AC3 filter and DeDynamic filter (see this link (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=97567) )

Change the extensions of the HD trailers from *.mov to *.mp4 !!! (This is important, so Haali Media Splitter and ffdshow do the job)

Ok. What we did ?
- we separated the old qt v6.0 trailers (mov) from the new qt 7.0 hd trailers, so we can decide that which filters handle the old movs (Directshow or Quicktime)
- we get better picture quality !!! if you don't beleive me, try it :)
- AC3 filter and DeDynamic finally can connect to a qt file !!!

I have found some old (v6) home-made trailers, which have no sound with this setup, so it's not perfect, but far better than anything which is now available ...

Please post your experience !

Btw: Have you known this trailer site ? www.movie-list.com (http://www.movie-list.com/) One of the best on the net, if it not the best ! (Forums -> Trailer News, and if you are registered, then a Forum Exclusive topic also shown ... :) )

My computer isn't very fast so I get some stutters in the audio on demanding clips when using ffdshow to decode the video and audio. In the quicktime player only the video stutters a bit which is less irritating.

On the other hand, movies seem to play more smoothly than with the quicktime player and the colors are much better.

I tried to disable ac3filter and dedynamic filter to make it less demanding on my system and I still got surround. Audio still stutters though. I didn't need quicktime alternative either. What does these programs actually do? I thought ac3filter was separating the channels but it seems to work just fine without it. The only filters i'm using is ffdshow to decode the audio and video and haali media splitter to split the quicktime file. Are the other filters just to get equalized audio?

There does indeed seem to be problems with 5.1 audio in Quicktime 7, especially on Creative soundcards.

I get no audio out of the center channel when in 5.1 mode, and quadrophonic mode just clones the sound to 4 speakers (not true surround.)

I can confirm this happens on these cards:

Creative Audigy
Creative Audigy 2
Creative SB Live!
Creative X-FI XtremeMusic

I contacted Creative's technical support, and they said Quicktime is "third party" so they can't help. Apple never responded to me; Apple doesn't even have a "technical support" for Quicktime (even though I bought it.. go figure.)

Thanx for the info. And the rear channels too?
But I'll stick with the haali's and ffdshow method ... :)

I had no problems with the rear channels. Just the center speaker didn't want to work with earlier Quicktime versions. But now everything works just fine with Quicktime. No need to use ffdshow, or haali's media splitter..(thank god - too many codecs = less performance).
