New iPod Video

not a lot of specs on the video part really but it has this when describing its video playback + battery life:

Video capacity is based on 4 minutes per H.264 750-Kbps video combined with 128-Kbps audio.

Slick. Depending on how robust the H.264 decoder chip is, this thing might take over the (admittedly small) hd-chassis video player market overnight.

Now all that remains is for len0x to add h.264 to autogknot and an ipod profile ;)

To go with the video iPod, Apple also announced that you can purchase h.264 TV shows and music videos for $1.99 with iTunes. The TV show episodes will be available the day after they are broadcasted.


I like how a 3 minute music video is just as expensive as a 45 minute TV show episode. Even though I think the music videos are overpriced I am still excited that a company is finally providing this type of service.

I just don't see any reason why to buy it over the PSP, when it's more expensive. It can't do anything the PSP can... well, except for a much larger hard drive.

Just did a quick google on prices:
PSP - £180
4Gb HD for PSP - £150
Total - £330 [Edit: fixed the arithmetic, doh!]

Looks like the 30Gb iPod will be retailing for £210. So NO, the PSP turns out to be more expensive than the iPod if you're going to be using it for video (and a 4Gb HD is pretty pathetic too).

The PSP wins on screen quality, of course, and tools for getting video into the silly format Sony uses seem to be set up, though I don't doubt that similar stuff will become available for the iPod pretty soon. While the iPod supports H264, that only goes up to 320x240, though it does do Simple Profile to 480x480 if you want to output the video to another monitor.

Obviously, the iPod wins big-time on style and is significantly smaller than the PSP. I don't own one (have never owned an iPod, I listen to mp3s through my Palm T3), but the iPod wins easily as the device you'd want to carry around all the time.
