Can anyone help me please!!!!!!!

I am new to all this,

I have downloaded 2 files (MPG & AVI from multi web sites) on to my Windows XP Machine, via Broadband phone line.

What quality can I expect to have, when I copy them on to a DVD Disc to view on my TV?? Is one better than the other.!!

I have Burned the MPG file but the quality is not very good, Picture a bit jumpy also sound is not quite in sink.
