Hi,
I use a TV-Card with internal MPEG-2 Encoder (Haupauge WinTV PVR).
Is there a way to capture from this card in VDub using the Hardware MPEG-2 enc? When I click "Video -> Compresion" there is only one entry: "Uncompressed (HCW2)". The AVIs captured in the HCW2 format are very large and they won't playback. Even VDub rejects to open them.

The only app I use, which captures in MPEG-2, is WinTV-2000. But I don't like this software at all. Using VDub for capture would be nice...

VirtualDub can only capture files in AVI format, and there isn't a way (at least, no standardized way) to put MPEG-2 video in an AVI. You'll have to use an AVI compatible codec, like Huffyuv.

Unfortunately, if your card only outputs HCW2 then you're out of luck. You won't be able to use VirtualDub.

But before giving up, try using the "set custom format" dialog to set RGB24 or YUY2 format. If the card can output one of those formats then you're all set, because almost any codec will work with those.

Why not use GBRecord (http://www.shspvr.com/smf/index.php?topic=7680.0) - a nice command line easy to use recorder for the hardware encoding cards. It does more than just hauppauge cards too.

Via Vdub/VirtualVCR or any other Capt.Appl. which supports Dshow or Vfw you can directly capture mpeg2 into an AVI container incl. sound via FFdshows internal mpeg2 codec. And even here you can directly capture the video into a m2v "raw" stream by setting in ffdshow "output to external file". But then still the audio only is included in the AVI container beside the raw m2v on your HD.

For decoding the mpeg2 in an avicontainer you have to check the option "mpeg in avi" in the supported decoding section of ffdshow.

Anyhow, .... if doing that ... means if capturing to mpeg2 which results in a YV12 target, then you directly can use a mpeg4 codec in ffdshow.

BUT beside saying all this .... this ffdshow mpeg2 codec is totally independant from the PVRs internal mpeg2 coding engine, means no goal from the Cards side.

"set custom format" shows a lot of formats, but if I select something that is not HCW2 then it says: "Format *not * supported by Hardware"

That ChrisTV doesn't work for me!
It either crashes or I get a frozen image. I've tried all the settings, but no success :(

Can you suggest another tool like ChrisTV ???

Try to ask a question on their forum, forum.chris-tv.com. That must help you,but it is very strange that ChrisTV 4.70 doesn't work,I use it and that never happens to me.

BTW you must register to a forum to post a question.
