View Full Version : Seeking assistance with a heavily interlaced source

I apologize for being a newbie to video editing and encoding. I understand some of the basics of AVISynth, but not enough to produce a decent encode of this faulty source. I can clean up the source pretty well with KernelDeInt, but when I try to do so with an IVTC, it looks awful. Could somebody please work with the source and help me clean it up enough whilst IVTC'ing the framerate to 23.976? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

ehehehhh. could you possibly cut a smaller chunk out? 147 megs is a tad big for me to download while at work.
the latest DGindex should be able to chop video, also chopperXP and cuttermaran can do it. just a few seconds worth should be enough.

just so i can maybe help a little before then, can you describe the source a little?
there's several kinds of interlace, as i'm sure you've found out by now. usually they require different treatment.
something shot on video (in NTSC) will not be IVTC'able to 23.976 fps - it should either be deinterlaced to progressive 29.97, bob-deinterlaced to 59.94 fps (to keep the motion... it's a shame to waste it), or simply encoded at full height and kept interlaced (my favourite method - it's foolproof :)).
something shot on film will either:
a) have a good 3:2 pattern that shows as 2 interlaced frames per 3 progressive when you step through the source frame by frame.
b) have a bad telecine pattern where every field is a blend of 2 or more original film frames. with a source like this, you'll need to use something like restore24 and a very good deinterlacer like Tdeint to recover progressive, un-blended frames from a bad stream.
c) have sections of both. i've dealt with such sources and they're quite annoying...
just from your description of "heavily interlaced" i'm guessing your source was shot on video, and thus should be treated as such.

The source was recorded with a video camera, which might explain why it's so interlaced. I don't believe there's any progressive frames. To be honest, I have no video encoding experience outside of encoding anime, so this is a bit foreign to me. I'd really appreciate it if you could help me out once I get home and upload a smaller clip.

It's video then and cannot be turned to 23.976fps by IVTC. What is your destination format?

Alright, guys. I'm back from college now. Here's the cut sample. (http://s38.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1LKQLU07MNROA1OKI37G4284B5) Basically, I have a lot of concert DVD's, home movies, etc. that are completely interlaced and want to archive them in a considerably smaller compressed (XviD) format on my hard drive and I want them to be as clean as possible -- both in appearance and in synchronization with the audio. Is there any way to do a clean deinterlace of this source without losing any synchronization to the audio?

Ummm... if it's video (i.e. 30 frames per second or 60 fields per second) material, you'll have to deinterlace it (with, say, (Leak)KernelDeint ;)) to 30FPS, bob it (LeakKernelBob) to 60FPS (which, while being smoother, will require a lot more bitrate) or encode it as interlaced XviD and deinterlace it on playback on a non-interlaced device like a PC monitor.
Trying to IVTC will cause you a lot of unneccessary pain no matter how you look at it - if it hasn't been telecined in the first place you just can't undo it...

If you want an xvid encode you can just encode interlaced and be deinterlace on playback, if you're going to watch them on tv at a later date that's the best idea anyway. Otherwise, here's a very short overview: Interlacing And Deinterlacing (http://www.avisynth.org/InterlacingAndDeinterlacing)

I was able to convert to 59.94fps with mvbob and back to 29.97fps with changefps.
It looks good at 59.94fps. Nice and smooth.
29.97 looks kinda slow.
59.94 will need a larger bitrate for encoding though.

Alright, I played around with it a little bit and though it looks a lot better, it's still a little jittery and there's still some jagged edges reminiscent of jagged Playstation polygons. :p

Don't convert to YUY2 before deinterlacing. In fact, don't convert to YUY2 at all.
Try MVBob+MVFPS for the framerate conversion.

I tried mvfps with his video after I processed it with mvbob and to my eyes the video seemed less smooth than with changefps.
Not to say that mvfps is a bad filter, it just didn't seem to work well with this material.

Those artifacts look similar to TDeint artifacts.
This is one of the filters that mvbob uses.
The mvbob .rar file was created back in Febuary. I don't believe TDeint had AP back then.
Perhaps you could ask scharfis_brain to update it.
Other than that it looks pretty good. I never noticed any of these artifacts during playback. I had to use Vdub to see them clearly.
