I'm confused...Need help capturing with Firewire & Vitual Dub?

Hi,

I have some old 8mm and Hi8 family films, which I would like to capture, burn to DVD, and give as Christmas gifts to my siblings. I understand the basic process of getting the job done, but I am having a problem. Just to do a trial run, I tried to capture a short Hi8 clip. I figured once I got that down, then I could move on to the 8mm. Here is how I have things setup: I have a Sony Hi8 Handycam with a short clip on tape. The Hi8 Handycam is connected, via A/V cable, to a Sony Mini DV Handycam. The DV Handycam is connected to the computer via a PCI Firewire/iLink expansion card. The connection between the two video cameras is working; I can veiw the Hi8 clip on the DV camera. The computer recognizes when the DV Handycam is connected to the computer. I start Virtual Dub, but I cannot see or capture what I would like to capture.

I have read many threads and tutorials, but I am a bit confused. I read on the forum that Virtual Dub is not compatible with Firewire. Then I read where there was a Sony DV codec available, but the download link no longer works.

My question is: Can I actually use Virtual Dub with Firewire? If not, then what are my choices? Or what would you suggest? Any other suggestions?

Older VirtualDub versions could only open DV videos if a DV codec was installed. Regardless of that VirtualDub does not support capturing (its exactly just a copying process) from Firewire / 1394 / iLink sources. You will have to use WinDV / DVIO or any other NLE that can do that.
Usually firewire cards come with very basic versions of Ulead Studio (or whatever it name was) that can capture from firewire aswell.

Thought I would try to help.
I cap TV with my digital8's passtrough sometimes using a little program called WinDV to capture. Here is a link: WinDV (http://windv.mourek.cz/)
It will save in DV format which is only slightly compressed. 5 minutes of video takes about a gigabyte.
