i was wondering what is better for burning under windows inside an own tool or on the command line:
nero (api or cli-app) or mkisofs + imgburn or something else

so far i can only see one advantage each
nero needs a step less and the mkisofs+imgburn combo is free

are there any other advantages (quality, error-rate, ...) or other tools to consider?

thx for any advices

Nero is probably the worst choice for burning DVD-Video files, especially for double layer DVDs.
You should use either the PgcEdit/MkISOFS/ImgBurn combo, RecordNow MAX, or Gear. See here (http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=45025) to learn why. You may also want to have a look at my homepage (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/). There are two good guides on how to burn with PgcEdit.

Based on my own experience, I'm afraid I have to disagree with you. I have had no problems in my several years of burning (CDs and DVDs) with NERO - including my recent activity (a dozen or more) of burning D/L backups of commercial DVDs (Now that the prices for this media have come down significantly, as I predicted at another forum)...

But it is completely wrong when it tries to burn DVD-Video files. It doesn't respect the informations in the IFOs, and it places the layer break where it wants, not where the user wants! Although this is not noticeable with most recent standalone players, it's still an issue with older ones. And the 32K gaps are lost, giving very poor DVDs, though they are still playables (until there is a tiny scratch somewhere!)

Anyway, this forum and many others are full of complains regarding Nero and double layer DVD+R. And Nero is totally unable to burn a dual layer DVD-R so far.
In the other hand, I have never heard of a problem with PgcEdit (and I am well informed on this point! ;)) Of course, this doesn't mean you will never burn a coaster with PgcEdit, but that's the fault of bad media or burner, or of a power supply failure.

For a long and complex discussion on this subject, see here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=95250).

@r0lZ

But it is completely wrong when it tries to burn DVD-Video files.

To clarify my previous post - I've had no problem using NERO in "DVD-Video" mode when burning FILE "package" backups (.IFOs, .BUPs, and .VOBs, not ISO image files)of my commercial DVDs to DVD5s and DVD9s...

(This now seems to put us at opposite ends of the "success spectrum" regarding two things - Pioneer burners and NERO ;>})
