View Full Version : Burning homemade movie on DVD+R DL

First off, hello forum. My question is quite simple but I couldn't find a proper answer while searching the forums, nor was google of enough help.

I've created a homemade family movie with menus and all and I plan to burn it on DVD9, process I'm completely unfamilar with.

When I backup commercial DL movies using DVD Decrypter in ISO mode, the layer break is retained hence no problem, but when there's none (this case), most of the burning app I've tried tend to force it's own unless another one is manually specified, but I can't seem to find the proper settings, it always ends up playing OK on my burner, but never in my LG connected to the TV.

1. The files sum 6.14.
2. My recordable DVD is a Memorex 8.5gb.
3. My DVD Burner is LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1633S

What would be your suggestion? :thanks:

Did you make sure to record your disc with a DVD-ROM bitsetting? This fools standalone drives into believing that your disc is a real DVD-ROM.

DL DVD recording discs are relatively new and even the most recent players can't recognize them very well unless they are fooled.

Some DVD burners support bitsetting while others don't.

Lite-on's are pretty good drives though, so I'm pretty sure they would support it.

I'm not too familiar with how to burn DVD movies to DL that already have a layer break included. A better place to find out about this is to go to club.cdfreaks.com

@Waleska

As an experiment, you might want to take one of your burned DLs (plays on burner but not on standalone player) to an electronics store and try playing it on several different standalone DVD players...

Thanks, I'll give it a shot. Would you recommend a specific app for this particular task?, I use Nero for pretty much everything that's not a backup. Found this lil tutorial but I'm unable to find the option they make reference to:

Change Your DVD+R/DVD+RW/DVD+R DL Media to DVD-ROM using Nero Burning ROM (Click For Nero Express Tutorial) This tutorial assumes that you have a working ISO to burn Put in a Blank DVD+R or DVD+RW Disk into your DVD Burner Open up the Nero SmartStart Click "Cancel" button to close out the "New Compilation" window when it pops up Click on "Recorder" > "Choose Recorder". Select your DVD Burner Then click on "Options", then on "Book Type Settings", set to "Automatic" and click "OK" Now whenever you use Nero to burn DVD+R Media, it will automatically change the BookType or BitSet it to DVD-ROM

Nevermind, found the option in "Test Drive" but I can't still change it

I had the chance to test it on 3 different DVD players but it failed just as in mine, still, thanks for the hint.

It might be an issue with the firmware.

I don't have a Lite-On burner, but I know that some people who have 'em use omnipatcher (http://codeguys.rpc1.org/patchers.html) to tweak the firmware. It can also enable features that may have been hidden by the manufacturer.

Make sure to read about it before you use it. And use it at your own risk.

Good luck.

You can put the layer break wherever you want/need it with PgcEdit & DVDD, here's the guide (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/third_party/blutach/dl_burning_with_pgcedit.htm)

Alright, sorry about the delay and thanks again for your help. It seems like it's not the layer break but the booktype; my DVD burner doesn't do DVD DL dash, only plus (not compatible with many DVD players it seems). My bad for losing the manual.

More likely, your problem results from the BRAND of DL DVD+R. Most related postings at this and other forums have indicated that, presently, the only reliable burnable DL media is Verbatim DL DVD+R.

Also presently, it seems that there has been little, if any, success burning DL DVD-R media...

I use Memorex mainly because it's what's usually available on my local stores (no problems so far other than not being able to use them on regular DVD hardware) although I'm aware some have had better luck than me . I recentrly tried Verbatim and same results. That said, I'm tempted to believe that a successful burning ain't particular of Verbatim but probably of a combination of certain recordable media and player.

As for DL DVD-R, well, I can't tell much, just that every single commercial DVD9 I own is recorded like that. Guess I still have alot to learn ;)

Commercial DVD's aren't burned, they're pressed. Despite it being reported as a DVD-R, you're comparing apples to oranges.

I've just done the same thing with photo's converted to a slide show with the Cyberlink DVD solution and Video again processed with PowerDirector.

I didn't worry about layer break or anything like that, being ever the optimist I simply fired up Nero 6, stuck in a DL disc (Ridisc DVD + R DL 2.4x) and clicked on "burn".

Nero basically just did everything, plays in stand alone no problems. Same with making my security backups of purchased DVD's.

Rip with DVDDecrypter, extract movie only with DVD shrink, tip the files into Nero and burn. Voila, it just works.

Now did I miss something important that's going to bite me later? Or is it simply that Nero is really quite a good bit of software.

Two things to consider:

Avoid using DL DVD-Rs! The method used to place the layer break is not standard at all, and causes many troubles. Though you can create an ISO for DL-R with PgcEdit, it's more difficult and risky. Use the good technology only: Verbatim DL DVD+Rs, with DVD-ROM bitsettings.
For the same reason, you should never burn a DL-R with an ISO made for a +R, or directly extracted from the original commercial DVD. You will probably end up with a coaster.

Nero is unable to place the layer break at the position you want, and doesn't respect the original layout of the files, hardcoded in the IFOs. You should use PgcEdit to position the layer break where you want (it's easy), and burn with PgcEdit (or ImgTools Classic) and ImgBurn. Currently, it's the only way to be sure to burn a good DL DVD.
If you want to burn DL-Rs with PgcEdit, be sure to fill the correct "L0 data zone capacity" value in the burn setup dialog! This value is displayed by ImgBurn for the current media. You don't need to worry about that value for DL+Rs, or single layer DVDs.
