How can I compress i420 or iYUV to Xvid?

Hi all, new member here but have been using your knowledge a few years now on and off. I've tried the FAQ's and done my best to search for my answer but to no avail so far.
I have a webcam that makes movies (philips ToUcam Pro) in either i420 or iYUV format. It suggests it has a compressor where I can choose Xvid or a variety of other formats but I see no way to make it happen.

My question is what process(es) do I need to do to get a tightly compressed Xvid file?

I have used avisynth once to move the audio on a clip...and am pretty au fait (sp!) with PC's but I'm not very knowledgable about Y's and U's and stuff yet.

i assume you've tried virtualdub? that'll handle it. if you're using avisynth and loading i420, it might come out with swapped chroma planes (it'll be blue instead of flesh coloured), but that's easily fixed with either "swapUV()" in the script, or a proper i420 codec :)

no not tried virtualdub.... i'm a newbie so I wanted a shove in the right direction. There is ALOT of stuff to read here :-) and just wanted to narrow it down in the first instance with exactly the help you just gave..thankyou! I'll go read now...i may be some time................

hehehe. np - virtualdub(mod?) and avisynth is the only way to go. as mf says, heaven's encoding tools go hand in hand.

virtualdubmod's script editor is good too, as it highlights avisynth stuff - internal functions go green, plugins go purple, everything else goes black (except comments which have a # in front of them go grey). it's a good way to know if you've typed the right thing :)

once you've got a little practice with the basics of avisynth, all the other stuff you read here will make a lot more sense...

You could install the Helix YV12/I420 VFW Codecs (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=56972).

Just pointing a little more specifically at a previously mentioned suggestion. ;)

VirtualDub worked a dream, didnt need extra codecs. Thanks guys an gals :->
