Impossible to disable DivX6 decoder?

I'd like to play around with the new DivX 6 features, but was annoyed to find that the bundled decoder steals playback from ffdshow without any way to turn that off. This happens on video streams that were encoded using DivX5 and that play perfectly well under ffdshow.

I can understand making it steal priority by default, in order to ease support issues, but the least DivX could have done was to bury a disable option somewhere suitably deep that newbies couldn't fiddle with it. Or maybe I'm the newbie and simply haven't been looking in the right places?

This is sufficiently irksome that I'll probably end up uninstalling DivX altogether if I can't find a work-around. Changing the 4cc to xvid using the usual 4cc-changers doesn't work, as analysing affected video streams in gspot shows that there's a buried divx 4cc that causes the stream to be routed to the DivX demuxer.

No problems with that here, just enable DivX decoding in ffdshow and everything's fine. If you are playing .divx files, I think you will actually need the DivX decoder to get acces to the .divx features.

Hmm, I tried setting all the DiVX and 'other MP4' settings to libavcodec in the ffdshow config, but no-go. I'm using the latest Sept 2005 build of ffdshow.

Like I said, if you want the DivX features you will probably need the divx decoder.

Uh, maybe I wasn't clear?

I want to be able to force DivX to release decoding to ffdshow - pretty simple really. When I want to play with the menus (since subtitles and multiple audio streams are already available with better solutions) I could turn the switch back to DivX, but in the meantime I DON'T want DivX stealing playback. According to a post I read elsewhere, ffdshow can handle DivX6 streams fine, it just fails to render the extras.

Is it possible to have DivX reside on my system but be disabled until I want to use it? Or is my only option to uninstall it and forget about it completely?

Well, I don't know why it doesn't work for you, ffdshow decodes DivX fine here with DivX6 installed. But then, I don't know why you install something you are not gonna use, either...

You could always use regsvr32 /u i guess.

You might want to look for a program called FilterManager.exe by Radlight. It allows changing the merit of direct show filters so you can tell Windows what to use and not use for decoding.

Yes, try that.

If that doesn't work do RegSvr32 /u DivXDec.ax.

The only format the DivX Decoder won't "release" so easily is DivX.
