View Full Version : Gearing up for the next generation of PMP

I am planning to buy a PMP soon. I'm not entirely sure which model yet (Archos AV500 or iStation V43 are favorites) but want to prepare my DVDs for it already.

- screen will definitely be 4" - 4.3" 16:9 480x272
- I want to mainly watch movies on the player itself, but would also like to have a "decent" output on a TV (to hook it up in a hotel room, for example).

What resolution would you experts recommend for this purpose?
I was thinking that using 480 x XXX would probably cause the player to "work" less (hence better battery autonomy?) but would that be enough to watch on a TV without having to cringe?

I guess my post boils down to asking what resolution a VHS movie is (that's about the quality I'd like to achieve) and how to best achieve such a quality while saving space.

What is better in such a case:
- higher resolution and lower "quality" (set in Auto Gordian Knot or using compressability test in Gordian Knot)
- lower resolution but higher "quality"

Also, I have read somewhere on this forum (I believe) that dual pass encoding is a waste of time in this case since its only real benefit would be accurate file size
(which is irrelevant on a HDD based player). Yet the Xvid FAQ states very clearly that dual-pass should ALWAYS be used!

I am totally confused here...

PS: As a side note, I think PMP are fast becoming the next big thing in terms of gadgets and will definitely incite many more people to do video encoding.
A suggestion - how about building a section on Doom9.org dealing specifically with encoding for portable media players? (screens 4:3 320x240 or 16:9 480x272)
Guides for that specific purpose - aimed at newbies - would be awesome ;-)
