View Full Version : Can no longer play AVI files

WinXP Home
Windows Media Player 10
Viplay 2.09

All **WERE** working fine...
I formatted my computer and re-installed all the codecs (DivX, XviD, AC3), but I now can't play AVI video files, on either WMP or Viplay.

The errors are as if I don't have codecs installed.

Only seems to be AVI vids, other formats run fine.
Nothing I seem to do makes any difference.
GSpot says that I do have all the needed codecs installed. I even tried ffdshow. There's nothing wrong with the AVI files. And of course I can play the movies in mplayer or VLC Player. I just don't understand, everything worked before.

Any ideas how I rectify this?

Is DirectX properly installed?

try: start > run > regsvr32 quartz.dll

That re-registers the avi splitter.

Why is it a bad idea?

To reregister it it may work, but if you unregister it, you screw up your entire DShow system. Even reinstalling DX doesn't help. :(

Have you tried DirectX6Media ? It doesn't overwrite any new files but rewrites all the correct DS entries in the registry. I often fixed my system with it.
