MSU JPEG 2000 Image Codecs Comparison Released!

MSU VideoGroup have tested 9 main JPEG 2000 codecs with PSNR and visually to find a leader. All of them are better then JPEG, but there is some difference between them!

Were tested:
* JASPER 1.701.0
* ACDSee 7.0
* Leadtools JPEG 2000 Photoshop plug-in 1.0
* Morgan JPEG 2000 toolbox 1.2 rev 0.0
* Lurawave 2.1.10.04
* Kdu_compress 4.5.2
* JPEG 2000 Compressor (Anything 3D) 1.00.000
* Elecard Wavelet 3.0 Beta
* Photoshop CS2 ‘native’ plug-in 1.6

So we can predict difference in Motion JPEG-2000 results now.

Seems like ACDSee is kicking ass now with 7.0. 6.0 performance IMO (no PSNR testing or anything, just good ol' human eyes) was way slack, with Artifacts a 'splode. Too bad it probably couldn't be turned into a Motion JPEG-2000 codec, unless they feel like doing that.

Think I'll go find the JPEG-2000 specs now, to see what they're doing better as opposed to JPEG.

JPEG2000 is cool for the size, but for archive (like wallpapers) best keep good old JPEG, which is compatible everywhere but bigger.

Jpeg2k is scaling better than good old jpeg as the compression is increased, so it still stays somewhat watchable even when jpeg becomes an array of funny colorful blocks, but for real usage, it's inferior imo. In my experience jpeg2k stays blurry even at higher bitrates, where jpeg is almost perfectly able to reproduce the original image, so it's no surprise that jpeg2k is still not popular and almost nobody uses it.

I still use png if I realy want to keep quality, jpeg for sharing, but I agree, jpeg2k is still blurry
