Hello all,

Using pro v1.00RC6 (donated on Friday - seems to be excellent software - many thanks jdobbs).

Over the past few days, I ran some tests comparing the quality of HC (versions 15A & 16) and CCE (2.67.00.27 SP trial & CCE 2.70.01.04 Basic) with Saving Private Ryan (yr 2000 region1 release).

I have watched and compared sections from each. Whilst doing so, I noticed that with the HC encodes (both 15A & 16) starting around the 9min30s point, the audio begins to dropout & some combing is visible in the video. This is apparent only on my standalone machine (an Arcam DV29 - the pc playback is fine). While playing back this 'faulty' section, the standalone will not respond to any navigation commands. After this short period (around 30s), everything continues as normal.

Both CCE encodes are fine. To check it was not a media issue, I burnt the offending encodes to two different discs - same on both.

I'm not really concerned, because the CCE encodes (which I prefered the quality of anyway were fine). I can't even tell you if the problem is with DVD-RB or HC. I just thought I would report it anyway.

Many thanks,
Bob

I just worked on something this week related to how HC does a lot of adjustments in the GOP size when it is set to GOP SIZE = AUTO. In a post here on Doom9 it came to my attention that it may be possible when adding pulldown sequences to M2Vs using that option, to create VOBUs that are longer (in terms of time) than the DVD standard... DVD-RB adds the pulldown sequences to the output of HC. I don't know that this is the (of even "a") problem as I have yet to see it happen -- but I have corrected DVD-RB so that it no longer uses AUTO as the option for these sources. That change will be in the next release.

Ok; thanks for the reply. When the next version of RB is released, I will re-test with HC and report back.

Cheers,
Bob

Thanks. The v1.00 (Final) release should be sent out soon. After that release I'd better start working on v1.10 as my list of "promises" is getting rather long.

Can you tell me what the contents are on the disc for that year's release and the total size of the entire disc altogether. I've backed up the D-Day 60th Anniversary Edition and while it looks fine on my 27", I can't say the same for my 52" HDTV. It is a long film but I'm wondering if I'm better off backing up the bare bones release instead. After all with a film running 169 minutes, CCE can only do so much. :(

Hi,

It is a 1 disc release:

1. The main movie has both 6 & 2 channel audio (no DTS) - file size: 6.7GB
2. Special Features (total of 1.2GB):
A message from Spielberg
Into the breach
Theatrical Trailer
Re-release trailer
Cast & crew
Production notes

Total disc size: 7.9GB

As for quality, SPRyan is an absolute nightmare (for any encoder), the best quality encode that I have acheived over the past few yrs was with DVD2DVD using about 3% FACAR. I have tried undot & deen filtering which makes it look different, but it is subjectively difficult to say whether the result is better or worse!

If quality is really important, I would split this over two disks, or just use a DL disc! I agree with your remarks about display size - backups that used to look ok on my 32" CRT begin to look suspect on my 50" HD plasma!

Hope this helps,
Bob
