Problem streaming WMV files

I've been raking my brain over this for a while
I am having problems streaming WMV files straight from the web. I usually take the URL and just drag into the player of my choice (Media Player Classic, Winamp and Windows Media Player as a last resort)
The file refuses to play producing the following error in MPC

I've insalled both Windows Media DMO codecs and Windows Media 9 runtimes and that still doesn't work.

Now, saving the file allows me to play it just fine, but it's an annoyance.

I used to get an error similar to that which media player do you have to automatically open wmv files? If it's media player classic then all I did was make windows media plaer my native player for wmv and clear my temporary internet files. Hey it worked for me.
