New DualDisc Format Launched

It may have escaped some of you guys attention but Sony have released a new format called DualDisc :eek:

These shiny new disc's have a CD audio layer on one side and a DVD layer on the other....

I can't imagine how I could care less. CDs are obsolete. I'd prefer a DVD with a nice label.

Yep... I agree it's a pretty pointless format!

When I first heard about the format, I was of the impression that Sony was going to release disc's with an CD audio layer on one side and a DVD-Audio layer on the other.... Thus offering something similar to Philips's Super Audio CD format.

I thought that some other company already came up with this some time ago? Weren't they supposed to be working on using layers instead of two sides? So CD on first layer and DVD on the 2nd. That way you can have an audio CD, DVD and a nicy fancy label for Doobie.

Another thing I recall reading is that song writers wanted royalties paid twice per disc since they contained both audio CD and DVD of the same material.

I've seen these in stores before, at least four or five months ago. I can almost sort of see the point - you can play the audio side in your car's CD player and watch the DVD anywhere else. Obviously, I'd just extract the audio and burn it for the car, but not a lot of people want to be bothered with that.

I have a few of these single sided dual layered hybrid disc's and the CD audio layer works/plays fine in the car!

I wonder why the same type of "hybrid" approach is not being done with CD audio and DVD audio media?
