View Full Version : Encoding just a portion of an MPEG2 file

Hi,

I searched the forum but couldn't find anything on this. Is there any way for AutoGK to just encode say from minute 25 to minute 50 of a 1 hour MPEG2 file? I know I could edit the file before I encode but unfortunately I can't seem to use any MPEG2 editors becuase there is something wrong with the file (the editor only opens up 11 minutes of the file as if there is an error at minute 11). Fortunately when I encode the whole thing to AVI it works perfectly.

If there is absolutely no way to do it with AGK, I guess I'll have to do it with GK, but I'm a bit of a noob - I've used GK to do a DVD but can't figure out how to use a standard MPEG2 file as input (.mpg)

If none of this is possible, would it be possible to cut portions of the encoded Xvid avi without re encoding?

Thanks for your patience.

Try Vidomi - it won't work with current XviD versions, but there are two options:

1) Uninstall Xvid, then install Vidomi to encode with its version of XviD. After encoding your file, reinstall, then uninstall/reinstall your current XviD. (Believe me, it'll be necessary.)

2) When installing Vidomi, uncheck XviD installation and use Divx 3.11 Alpha.

I got tired of uninstalling/reinstalling XviD every time I needed to do a TV capture encode, and Vidomi is such an easy-to-use editor that I've just switched to DivX 3.11 Alpha, and it still does a great job.

I think you can also import your avi into VirtualDubMod and trim it, outputting in just Direct Stream Copy mode.

Thanks for all you help guys. Does anyone know if I can get the rew and forward buttons in DG Index to move frame by frame to make more accurate trims?

Cheers,

not at the moment, but better cutting support there is in the works afaik.

Me again.

I followed the instructions, using AGK as soon as DG Index comes up, I maximise the window and press escape. I then trim the portion I want and go to save as. Then when it's finished I close DG Index and it automatically runs Be Sweet. I've noticed that it says in the file name of the mp3 file -284s (for example) - (presumably it's worked out the delay from my trimming) but when it's finished encoding the avi, although the portion of video is correct, the audio is from the very beginning of the original file.

Intuitively I know the I'm doing something very basic wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.

Mr Noob T Bear,

Do you see two demuxed audio files in agk_tmp dir? AutoGK probably picked the old one - you have to delete it before saving the project in DGIndex manually.

Works like a charm.

Cheers mate.
