Normally when I have my video (MPV) and audio (AC3) ready to go, I use something like MuxMan to author a basic dvd. But what if I just want to author an MPEG-2 file that has the audio and video together; i.e. just a file with .mpg extension. What is a simple and compliant solution for this? I know bbMPEG can mux DVD video and audio but what settings to use? I've only used it for SVCD. Are there other free apps that can do this as well?

Mplex will do this, but apparently it is not as compliant as it could be (although it's still widely used). It's cli only.

It may well be possible to create a dvd using MuxMan and then use another app to dump out an mpg, I don't know.
