I keep running into the same issue with every version of AVI-Mux GUI since 1.16.11. If I mux an AVI file with that version using VBR encoded by lame it plays fine in every DirectX based player I have and opens with VFW programs like vdub with just the usual VBR warning. If I mux with any newer version including 1.17.3 when I try to play the ouput I get an error that it couldn't render the file. Using Zoom Player and different AVI splitters I found that I can play it with the Gabest AVI Splitter but not the default Microsoft one or Haali Media Splitter. MPC plays it fine as expected since Gabest splitter causes it to play fine in other programs. WMP can't play it no matter what but that's likely because one of the other two splitters is higher priority than the Gabest one and I didn't really spend much time checking WMP. Vdub opens it fine with just the usual VBR warning.

MP3 files were encoded with lame 3.90.3. Tried --alt-preset standard, --alt-preset medium, and some abr 192 files, all with the same problem. Tried pretty much every setting in the mp3 input options and AVI output options of AVI-Mux GUI without it making a difference. If anyone else has encountered this or has some suggestions as to what else to try or what may be causing them please let me know. Can provide a sample encode if people wish.
