View Full Version : Jerky Playback with 1080i Long Movies

Hi everyone, i'm having trouble shrinking some HD stuff.

It only happens with stuff longer than 40Mins, and all have been 1080i.
When it's finished the playback is very jerky, like it pauses every second and then jumps ahead.

I have noticed that on everyone that is messed up AutoGK reports a warning after the first pass, something like this.

Warning : A different number of frames was found

Options i am checking are :

Force Deinterlace of hybrid stuff
Force sharp matrix
Autotune cropping, +8 at the bottom

Small stuff is unaffected, like TV shows. These encode no problem.

Any help would be great as i have a few things i really don't want to keep as TS files.

Thanks

It indicates a problem with framerate - I believe there is a setting to change 60fps to 23.976.

Ok thanks. I've been checking the change framerate to 29.97 since thats what all the original stuff was.

I'll just try letting AutoGK choose.

Hi-

I've been checking the change framerate to 29.97 since thats what all the original stuff was.

It may have been broadcast at 29.97fps, but if it was a movie, it was originally 23.976fps. I don't think I would force the deinterlacer either.

Even if you had set the wrong framerate, I'm not convinced getting it correct is going to solve your problem. You said it pauses every second and jumps ahead. It sounds like a lack of CPU power to me as well. Are you keeping these things at a high resolution? If so, that may cause a playback problem. But I could be wrong, and getting the framerate correct will fix it.

I have to report the same problem. I have not yet discovered the "with longer then 40 mins" only, but it happens only when the source material was detected as FILM.

I have tried many of the "hidden" options but sofar no effect.

I observed that the sound is playing normally but the movie is jerky as described. The synchronization picture/sound is completely lost. It looks as if the movie runs 29,970/23.976 faster and freeze momentarily to find a sync point and then continues at the faster rate.

For diagnostic purposes I think the log could be important, therefore I have included it at the end.

Can you post your computer hardware configuration? What you're describing sounds more like inadequate hardware. Your chosen bitrate and aspect could easily be overwhelming the transfer rate of your hard drive or motherboard's FSB.

Your chosen bitrate and aspect could easily be overwhelming the transfer rate of your hard drive or motherboard's FSB.

I did not choose the bitrates and aspect, but they were chosen by AGK.

The same file is played on 3 other computers and the IO-DATA HDNetwork Multi AV Player 2, all with the same behaviour.

Some of the HD files compressed with AGK are playing without problems.

As stated earlier I did not find a pattern of the reason why many of the compressed files are playing without problems and some om them are not.

not true - source has 1280 width while you're forcing it to be 1920...

Right, and even though it does appear that the computer specs you posted would be more than adequate to play a file of this size, it's certainly unnecessary to use an aspect larger than the source. You simply can't improve a picture just by making it bigger. It may be irrelevant to your problem, but I'd suggest reencoding it, or a portion, matching the output res. to the input. There's also a setting in hidden options to select converting 60fps to 23.976 that might be worth a try.

I have re-rendered the same movie with a fixed 1280 width setting. Problem as reported at the beginning of this thread still present.

I overlooked this "different number of frames" problem that can be an issue. I'll have a look, but dunno when I'm going to be releasing next version of AutoGK (as I just stopped the project).

I have converted 1080i stuff without problems, I do recall seeing a "number of frames" error once, but honestly I think it might have been in VideoReDo.

So it's possible that any "number of frames" problem I might have had w/my file was repaired w/VRD before even getting to AGK.

len0x
2nd October 2005, 16:01
1080i sources do not have this problem as they are usually 29.97fps. 720p on the other hand is 60fps and I can confirm that handling of those is broken in current version (but only if they are detected as FILM, in which case you can manually set them as 23.976 via hidden options).

I have done some additional testing with different media players using the problem file.

The original problem was reported with of BPlayer Pro 1.36
I have played the compressed file also with the Nero Showtime, Media Player Classic, DivX player, Pinnacle Showcenter 200, AVEL Linkplayer2. They exhibit the following problems.

The Nero Showtime displays the movie smoothly, but much faster then the sound.
The Media Player Classic - faster pictures, disturbed sound (PTS matching seems to work)
DivX player (v6) - Almost right display of pictures and sound. Only the sound is almost a second out of sync.
AVEL Linkplayer 2 - Pictures ok. Sound via AC3 of Yamaha Amplifier shows it is AC3, but short moments are audible for shorter then a second sometimes minutes apart, and not in sync.
Pinnacle Showcenter 200 - Pictures ok - Sound problems the same as with the AVEL Linkplayer 2

One of the conclusions is that in the reporting of these kind of problems, I (we) have to include the details of the media player.

To have a faster turnaround I have made a smaller testfile of the source Transport Stream file (1280x720p60). This file is around 360 MB (188 (TS packetsize) times 2,000,000) and is taken from the beginning of the original file. This subset file was compressed with identical parameters as the complete file (12 Gb).

The target was set to 132 Mb (same compression ratio).

The resulting compressed file plays however without problems on all my media players.
When the 2 logfiles are compared they alsmost to the end identical.

The most significant difference are the 2 lines in the log of the large file:
[28-9-2005 22:56:25] Trying to adjust settings.
[28-9-2005 22:56:25] No adjustment is possible

There is some truth in the remark at the beginning of this track that the problem only occurs with larger files.

Hereafter are the 2 last parts of the logs:
First the smaller subset file:

And this for the complete file:

Sofar I have no idea what is causing the reported problems. Creating a smaller test file to recreate faster results was not succesful.

This maybe a long shot, but I have had similar results with some HD Episodes of Battlestar Galactica, also 1080i. I went through and tried every option, not really knowing what they all meant. In the end It actually seemed that I was doing the right thing regards the video, it was just that the Audio was screwed, because when I chose mp3 as audio it was completely fine and played back ok.

What i did was this: Run the .ac3 audio file through besweet. Don't do any conversion just let it output a new version with very similar file sizes. Then use NanDub (the other version of VDUBMOD) to re-mux the audio. I found that this makes the avi file playback perfectly.

b.t.w. I have also noticed that the ac3 file from DGINDEX sometimes shows 448khz when it is actually only 384khz?!? Could this be part of the problem?
