...according to a Finnish music industry executive. He mentions that anybody who pays for a CD with their own hard earned money has no right to demand that their DRM'ed CD's or DVD's play in Linux or Mac OS's.

From there it's only a short jump to "you only have the right to play it on CERTAIN players - notably, THEIR DRM'd players." That's where it's all leading.

for the longer jump, "they" want own your *skin*, yes, the very one you're wearing. you'll have no right to wear it without a licence to use their patented genetic codes. "they" is also known as the "company", the "law".
they "own" quite a bit now that's on you.

The new modern dictators of this world - corporate powers. Shareholder value must be increased.
Is it air you are breathing? Belongs to insert_name_here, pay license now, or you get suffocated for using what does not belong to you....
Hmm, I believe he is actually incorrect about the CD part, the moment you purchase it, is the moment you own the CD completely everywhere, and noone can tell you what YOU can do with it. Its not as if you are obtaining a license to the CD, you buy it, its yours now. Anything else is a perverted twisting, the attempt to super license things.
Hopefully it will be extended to the food part, so i can return what is digested afterwards ... ;)
About the Linux part, I am not surprised industry isnt fond of Linux or the *BSDs - it cant be as easily controlled like Windows. Tools like ffmpeg mencoder transcode and of course scripted automaton make it easy to become independant.
Subnets arent controllable, and its pointless of the industry to continue pursueing it.
The only thing that they can do (ok, aside from having standards like upcoming HDDTV tying you into the pay-for-license seat...) is lance fear news in an attempt to modify people's perceptiona bout a topic (like "hackers are terrorists" ) and other non-amusing crap.
Mac OS is in the same boat like MS Windows by the way.

There's a very simple answer to all the problems caused by the RIAA/MPAA. Nobody is FORCED to by their products (YET). Boycott the Ba****ds hit 'em where it really hurts ... in their wallets. If you buy a cd/dvd that doesn't play on your system take it back and demand your money back. Don't pander to their whims, if they bring out a new system you don't like, don't buy it. If enough people boycott them they will either give in or go bust. Now is the time to strike while you still can, start a massive boycott of all their products. If you really care you'll do it if you don't care then you get what you deserve .. a corporate police society. The customer CAN control the marked if determined enough.
