i know for he-aac nero has been considered the best quality encoder available (and concensus seems to be for lc-aac itunes is best), but my question is now with winamp's new encoder getting so much attention, how does it compare with nero? (without Parametric Stereo of course because nero does not have that)

Try it here (https://helixcommunity.org/account/login.php?return_to=%2Fbeula%2Fdownload%2F) , create an account, login, and download Helix Producer for Windows (e.g. latest helixproducer_11beta2_windows.zip) and HE-AAC codec (racp_w_32_48.zip). Further information on how to use CLI is coming with the HE-AAC codec...

Isn't there a more simple encoder aviable? A GUI-Encoder, like Nero's AAC-Enc, would be nice...

RealAnime (http://www.detritus.qc.ca/) should be capable of encoding to Helix HE-AAC, but I do not know from what input and if it already supports 32/48 kbps encoding + wrapping it into a more useable container...

Tried it... RealAnime supports all BeSweet input formats (like PCM WAV, AC3... although not specified in drop-down menu) as well as 32/48 kbps HE-AAC encoding + wrapping it into a more useable container directly.

Very interesting...I'm going to go ahead and use this one for my next anime release that has 5.1 audio :)

Try this (http://kurtnoise.free.fr/RATP-1.0.exe)...;) but only wav files as input for the moment.

Nice, but does not work over here.
rpad file is being generated, when starting an error occurs:
"C:\Program Files\RATP\producer.exe" -i "C:\Programme...
You can already guess the problem... producer.exe is under "C:\Programme\RATP" in my case
Possible to change path to producer.exe in RATP.ini! Really nice tool again.

Interesting tool. But I'm having trouble to play back the resulting .m4a files. Is there a way to save it as "normal" .aac files, as Winamp creats them ???
//EDIT
Problem is: Winamp plays back the .m4a files with 22KHz instead of 44Khz. With .aac files it always works fine in Winamp... VLC starts playback, but keeps completely quiet. Media Player Classic says: Faild to render file. VLC/MPC work fine with the .aac files created by Winamp!
Furthermore this RATP encoder does not spoort Paramteric Stereo (aacPlus v2), eh?

m4a files play fine with fb2k and tcmp here...so maybe this is an issue with a winamp plugin. If you want to demux these files, try to use YAMB (in extract tab :: extract to raw).

nope coz it uses helix producer.

That YAMB seems nice. But the .aac file I extracted is sowhat strange: Winamp plays back that file correctly. The problem is it says "0 kbps" and - bigger problem - it won't seek at all in that file!

No PS-Support in Helix?

"No PS-Support in Helix?"
NO, is uses simple aac+ version 1 (PS support is in aac+ v2)

I now use Winamp's aacPlus-Encoder in BeLight. Great Tool !!!

not exactly...we can find it also with some others encoders (3GP reference, and probably in the next ND).

But I like Winamp. And since it's still one of the most popular players, I think the AAC files should play there correctly, eh? Since Winamp plays back all other AACs without any problems, there must be something wrong with the ones created by RATP. The ones created by BeLight work fine. So I'll stick to that Encoder :)

"aacPlus v1" is similar to "HE-AAC" - Two different names for the same thing
Just like "H.264" and "MPEG-4 AVC"
"aacPlus v2" is nothing but "aacPlus v1" plus Parametric Stereo

The winamp5.1's own mp4 demuxer(in_mp4) works somewhat strange. Use instead this plugin (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/MP4_Input_Plugin_for_Winamp.htm) which supports lc/he/ps formats and the extentions(mp4, m4a, aac) to decode.
There are raw format of AAC(with no header) which require the core aac parser for the decoder dsfilters to play the stream.
The winamp's new aac native(the new ct v2) decoder/encoder produces the AAC with ADTS header and seems having problems in identifying the raw aac files maybe.
Winamps direct show plugin also enables the aac/mp4 audio playback(by adding the extentions to the in_dshow property) through corresponding dsfilters installed. The mp4/m4a containers require some demuxer/splitter dsfilters(haali, 3vix, moonlight).

Your in_mp4.dll seems to work with the ".m4a" files created by RATP ;)
Playback in MPC/WMP works with Haali Media Splitter and CoreAAC, but with 3ivx Media Splitter the seeking-bar is hunting through the file and remaining at the end. Playback is okay :confused:
I now really don't know if raw .aac or the .mp4/m4a container is to be preferred *confused*
BTW: What the heck is ADTS ?????

The basic(essential) inquiries should be sought in the Audio FAQ sticky?? ;)
The new haali version is what I am using and seems to cover many containers(mkv, avi, mp4..).
The raw formats are flexible in splitting, combining and looks somewhat OLD.
And the format with any headers will make the player easy to identify the content and some meta informations.

:) That's what I tried to say...
aacPlus v1 = HE-AAC = AAC + SBR
aacPlus v2 = aacPlus v1 + PS = HE-AAC + PS = AAC + SBR + PS

Hello, Foobar2000 support AAC+V2 (AAC_HE+PS), here:

I tested with winamp encoder and CT, and sounds good and at the info box display correct, with b8 doesn't show total time, at main window shows bitrate oscillating between 46-50 kbps, at FB2K: Properties: other info:
samplerate = 44100
channels = 2
codec = AAC
codec_profile = SBR+PS

Look this (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=36870&view=findpost&p=325555)
Or visit this site (http://cosoft.org.cn/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5688&release_id=5821) and download the last Menc PowerPack version and the stripped Helix Producer version.

Like many people here I've been playing around with Nero's new freeware (CLI) encoder.
In particular I've been using it to generate 6Ch AAC-HE files at 128Kbps and comparing them to Coding Technologies (CT's) AAC-HE encoder at the same bit-rate.
Well I don't know about some of you guys but to my ears CT's encoder sounds quite a bit better than Nero's!
Has anybody come to an opinion yet?
Cheers

Aslo Same for me but for all 6ch bitrates 96-213 which is CT 6ch HE range, always CT sounds better.

These tests were on an older version of NAAC, right? Are there any tests on the new CLI encoder yet?

Yes im test with new nero encoder with all settings including -2pass and i don't see any noticable better quality in 6ch encoding than CT, old nero encoder is good only for stereo encoding.

I was asking about the Hydrogen Audio tests posted towards the beginning of the thread.
The hydrogen audio tests were performed using the old nero dlls. that comparison has to be updated.
