Hi,
I have an AVI file (video: XVID, audio AC3 5.1)
I want to reencode the AC3 to Mp3 and make the file smaller.
What I did so far:
Perhaps not the best way: Extracted the AC3 audio from VirtualDub -> Save WAV
Then I used BeSweet to convert it to 2 Channel Wav and Mp3 resp.
Now I want to fuse the Video part of the Avi with the Mp3 - how ?
So far I used the Besweet converted WAV in VirtualDub and used Compression with Lame to make MP3. As video I used the original AVI.
When I press save it starts saving, but the audio stream has 0 kb. The resulting AVI has no audio stream.
What can I do ?
Cheers,
sb

Hi,
If I try to fuse the UNCOMPRESSED BeSweet Wav to the Video Stream it works perfect. Just If I try e.g. Lame (or other codecs) it says MPEG audio sync error: try disabling MPEG audio time correction.
I tried disabling a few options - doesn`t work.
What can I do ?

Encode to mp3 in BeSweet and mux the avi file (without audio) with the mp3 using AviMux or VirtualDubMod.

Im not realy into making avi's, but have you tried virtual dub mod and added the mp3 stream (MENU: Streams->Stream list->Add> . And the mp3, is it cbr or vbr? I believe cbr is better in avi's (better support) but like i said ,im not into this stuff.

I have an AVI file (video: XVID, audio AC3 5.1)
I want to reencode the AC3 to Mp3 and make the file smaller.
1) Load the file into VirtualDubMOD (Different than standard VirtualDub)
2) Click on the "Streams" dropdown menu and select "Streams list"
3) Right click on the .AC3 audiostream - and click on "Full Processing Mode"
4) Right click on the .AC3 audiostream(again) - and click on "Conversion" and select "MPEG Layer 3" (.MP3). Place a checkmark next to "Show all formats"
5) Select the bitrate and frequency you prefer
6) Click on the "Video" dropdown menu and select "Direct Stream Copy"
7) Save with a new filename

Thanks, dude, this was exactly what I was looking for. But I have a little correction for your point bullet-point number 4:
4) Right click on the .AC3 audiostream(again) - and click on "Compression" and select "Lame MP3" (.MP3). Place a checkmark next to "Show all formats"
:thanks:
PS: The reason for Lame MP3 is because it supports far greater frequencies and bitrates than generic MPEG Layer 3 and is just as versatile and playable.

My pleasure ;>}
But I have a little correction for your point bullet-point number 4:... select "Lame MP3"
That's not a "correction", it's your personal choice. Not everyone has LAME installed. I personally have the Fraunhoeffer .MP3 Professional codec installed...

Now, here comes a mind twister: How on earth can some audio channels be missing from my MP3? When encoding from 5.1ch AC3 (which I originally encoded from an HE-AAC file), it should downmix to 2ch MP3, right? Or am I getting this wrong?
See, the thing is that you, as the viewer, gets placed in the middle of a circle of people who say stuff on each audio channel, including surround left and right, to really give you the impression that you're surrounded by those people. However, some of the voices are missing. I also noticed some background noise, like underwater sounds, are missing. How can I fix this?
I forgot to say: I've encoded the video to DivX 6 to play it in my KiSS DivX DVD player (Standalone DVD player; a KiSS DP-1000) and first, I had the audio in AC3, which should be decoded no problem. But what did I get? Missing channels. Then the 2ch MP3...same result: missing channels. When I play either one of them on my computer, no channels are missing. I don't believe the DVD player is the cause of this. Could it be my TV? Retail DVD's with AC3 are played just fine, with no channels missing.

Do you have an equalizer involved in your standalone DVD player/television setup?

There's an equalizer in my TV, but changing the setting doesn't have any effect.
The reason may be that it's a cheap crap TV; I'll try hooking the KiSS up to my other TV tomorrow and see if the audio channels are missing or not.
Feel free to post your thoughts in the meantime though, 'cause like I said, I've never had this problem with retail DVD's with 5.1ch audio before.
UPDATE: I found the problem: my cheap crap-TV.
