Looks like Philips got a relatively new player:

Manual here:

Anyone know what chipset there is in this one? Ppl are saying different things about this (http://board.softpedia.com/lofiversion/index.php/t1318.html), either Mediatek or ESS Vibrato II.

What about the 108 MHz/12-bit video handling, does it really give a better image than other players?

Given that this player supports GMC and Qpel, it's certainly not fitted with an ESS Vibratto II chip-set: -

So I think it's got to be one of MediaTek's MT1389xx chip-sets or Zoran's VADDIS 776

This player isn't generally under $100, but nearly. - around $150. Rated by some sites as the best player regarding format compability. Think I'm gonna buy me one :)

according to Philips, the only difference between the DVP5500 & DVP5505 models is the remote control.

there's also alot of fuzz about the next generation of KiSS (nowadays aquired by Linksys, Cisco's home market division) 6xx-series. But they're probably not gonna hit the market until 2006, and they're probably gonna be alot more pricy.
