View Full Version : FFVII: Advent Children Backup Playback Glitches / Stutters

When I went to burn my imported Advent Children DVD to playback on my PS2 with english subtitles incorporated, the video and audio will stutter / freeze a lot, mostly during completely white screen and black screen transitions. It also caused one of my friend's standalone DVD players to completely shut off, although the burnt DVD plays fine on my PC. Does anyone else have this problem?
It's not a burning problem, as I have tried different speeds including: 12x, 8x, 6x, 4x and 2x, all exibiting the same playback glitch. I have also tried using a variety of DVD media to no avail. My only guess is that this could have something to do with the DVD being in NTSC format while my PS2 only correctly supports PAL?

I don't need a DivX converter, as I am working from the original DVD files.

Take a look at the following Bitrate Analysis comparison:-
Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children NTSC DVD9:

Gladiator - Special Edition PAL DVD9:

Now, consider the fact that Advent Children's total running time is 01:42:21:033 and Gladiator's total running time is 02:43:54:052.
We can conclude that Advent Children has been overly bitrated (notice the hidden pun ;)) for compatible standalone player use (we can also conclude that DVDLab Pro's average bitrate calculation is utter CRAP). Let's hope the same problem doesn't exist for the US version or perhaps the European PAL version when they get round to releasing it.
Edit: Okay guys, I really don't know what's going on here, 'cos it works fine until it hits a white or black screen transition. The bitrate obviously drops dramatically during those times, so I don't know what's causing the problem now unless it can't handle the bitrate dropping so rapidly or something... I think I've pretty much ruled out the NTSC / PAL theory, because it plays perfectly up to the aforementioned screen fades.
