There are two up-to-date builts of LAME / LameACM aviable:
v3.97 Beta-1 and v3.98 Alpha-2

Which one shall I use ???


BTW: What I want to do is using the LameACM codec

Well 3.96.1 is the current stable version. 3.97 has a lot of enhancements however. I have no idea what's new in 3.98alpha (looks like that was just released today). If you look in the download zip file, there is usually a 'history.html' file that describes the changes in lame.

Problem: The latest entry in the "history.html" which ships with LAME 3.98 Alpha-2 is "LAME 3.97 beta September 12 2005"

They either did not do any changes or the history-file was not updated...

I have no idea what's new in 3.98alpha (looks like that was just released today).
It comes from the CVS...Once 3.97 went beta, then current CVS head became 3.98 alpha. Today, it's 3.98 alpha 2 I assume...;) And there are no big changes between these versions.

Yup, as Kurtnoise says right now 3.97 beta and 3.98 alpha are virtually the same.

The difference is that 3.97 beta will mailny get bugfixes and 3.98 is the new development branch. Personally, I would use 3.97 untill 3.98 becomes beta.
