WME9 - Crash Problems - Alternatives?

Hi guys,

I've been browsing the forums for a solution but have had no luck. I have a web project currently and my client wishes that I take video (with its audio) from a DVD and create WMV files from it for download from their website. I've managed to grab the VOBs ok, and i've tried several things, so I now have the files in VCD & SVCD formats also.

My main problem is that whenever I run Windows Media Encoder 9 and select souce file, it crashes. No matter what format the source is. I've seen other people complaining about this, but it seems no solution has been found. I've also heard people talking about using WMnicEnc or something, but I have no idea what .avs/.d2v files are. I basically just want a very simple method to convert these mpeg (vcd) / mpeg-2 (svcd) video sources to WMV.

If anyone can assist me with how to stop WME9 crashing (ie, which codec causes the crash) or any alternative method to convert to WMV9 from mpeg sources I would be most grateful.

There are other encoders that can produce .wmv output. You might consider Ulead's consumer-grade products. Their VideoStudio can produce wmv output and accepts unencrypted DVD input, 30-day trials are available for download.

I prefer AimOne Video Converter which does a nice job and is easy to use - I don't recall if the trial is limited to a filesize or if it adds a watermark. It won't convert directly from .vob, but I've used Vidomi to convert a .vob to an MPEG-2 which it does very quickly and completely lossless, and the end file loads into AimOne.

Hi,

WME is very sensitive to the decoder that is used. I've unfortunately found this out the last few days. For MPEG2, the NVIDIA Audio decoder crashes it. The DIVX video decoder crashes it, and the Sonic decoders don't work at all. For mpeg2, I would suggest buying the NVIDIA decoders. You can either use ,062 versions which work fine, or you can use the latest ones and download the dscaler decoders and change the merit of the audio decoders so that the dscaler audio is preferred. You can do this in ZoomPlayer.
