View Full Version : GK Divx 6 and bitrate issues

OK, I've been working with Gordian Knot and DivX 6 Pro, and as the guide explains you have to enter the calculated bitrate right before you start encoding in the first and nth pass.

However, as I understand it, since GK can't change the bitrate using DivX 6 doesn't this mean that encoding the Credits seperately becomes useless? The bitrate is recalculated but can't be reset. Furthermore, doesn't this defeat the purpose of using a 2-pass encoding method?

I've noticed that the ending file size is consistently smaller than the target using GK and DivX 6, and I'm assuming this is why. Is it impossible for GK to change the bitrate with DivX 6 or is it just not working yet?

you're right about credits part (and recalculation in general)...

OK, so the two pass system is still useful because it is used to create a variable bitrate video stream as opposed to a one pass system that simply uses a constant bitrate throughout? I'm guessing that the first pass is simply analysis so that the second pass can intelligently create the video with a variable bitrate. But doesn't the first pass also allow the average bitrate to be recalculated? If that's also the case that aspect would seem to be lost with GK and DivX 6.

There are only two types of recalculation possible:
- pre first pass, when exact audio size differs from initial settings or credits are taken into account
- post first pass, when number of frames for some reason is much more different from initial fugure (this ideally should never be the case)

So, those two are the only places where bitrate would have not been changed for divx6...

Thanks that clears things up a bit. I'm still curious as to why GK can't change the bitrate with DivX 6 like it could with 5. Is it because DivX 6 doesn't allow it, or just because the method has changed, and support for the new method hasn't been added to GK as yet?

I'm fascinated with how the encoding process works, so that's why all of this is of interest to me. Sorry if my questions are annoying or obvious.

coz DivX6 doesn't have a unique registry key to write the settings to, its build-dependent now...
