Ran my VHS videotaped home movies through a Plextor ConvertX to mpeg-2 and found the quality to be inferior to the VHS. Anyone know why this is, shouldn't it be identical in quality? Only thing I can think of is the fact that I chose the highest quality output possible (DVD-HQ). Maybe I should be using a lower quality output...

Which ConvertX did you use? The low-end models of any product rarely yield good captures. Choosing the highest quality possible can cause problems with playback such as jerky frames or pauses, but if it's smooth and just looks bad it's the device.
