I have some PAL avi's that I would like to convert to NTSC so that I can put them on a DVD. Is it possible to do this conversion? If so, with which utilities / software??

hi doomuser and welcome to the forum,

one valuable piece of advice i can give you is to use the search tool.

running a search on "NTSC PAL convert avi" you return this list of threads:
search results (http://forum.doom9.org/search.php?searchid=262719)

and with a quick flip through a few of them, i found this thread:
PAL to NTSC easy fix! (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=97303&highlight=convert+PAL+NTSC+avi)

That'll scare him off, hell it scares me off ;p

doomuser if you want to do it properly (well, as properly as such an operation can be done) then you need to start with the guides IMO.

If you can't be bothered, then there are plenty of crappy commercial one click converters about...if you are lucky you won't lose audio sync, get crashes etc :)

Hi doomuser,

the easiest thing will be to convert them with TMPGenc 2.5.
Load the source (AVI) and choose NTSC DVD.
Convert a short clip and burn it on CD/DVD.
Watch it on Your TV.
If it is enough for You do them all like this.
If You want to do it proper start reading the guides ;)

thanks matthew and Amnon82,
...i didnt realise that the thread i linked to was particularly scary ... but then again, as i have never converted a pal avi to an ntsc avi, i was safe in my own 'ignorance is bliss' world.

@matthew
i noticed your NameLess v1.09.0: one-click, hassle free avi->dvd conversion (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=100230) tool is able to do NTSC<->PAL conversion, is there a reason you havent recommended it in this thread? or am i missing something fundamental?.

cheers

When I said scary I pretty much meant it would be gibbly gobbly gook for a person new to this stuff, IMHO :) That applies to pretty much any sort of manual fiddling :)

As for failing to recommend my tool, it requires Soft Encode, so I assumed that mentioning it would have been a pointless exercise (and perhaps a tad tacky). Other than that, and the CCE logo, it is perfect :D

thanks for the clarification.

...and recommending your own tool can only be tacky if there is a hefty price tag and/or hefty ego attached to the self recommendation ;)
